Hit a couple short trails today with [MENTION=77842]EasylyConfused[/MENTION] and another friend. The driver of the Tacoma is 21 and about 90 lbs soaking wet. She will be the example I point out when people say that women can't wheel.

We were parked in the trees so it would've been pretty tough to see us from the other side. We did see a grey or silver Ford Ranger parked on the river bank on the Hwy 66 side as we were walking back from the falls though, so maybe that was the truck she saw.

Seems like you and your fellow wheeler have been running the MTRk and MTZ tires for a while now. Any thoughts on which is the preferred tire for your type of climate (on road) and trails (off road)?

I'd say it's like a religious debate - those who run MTRs think they're the best and those who run MTZs think they are. I don't know anyone who went from MTRs to MTZs or the other way around so I have no real comparison between the two.

Ok, some updates...

Replaced the ball joints on my LR UCAs. Pretty straightforward job, just need to get an alignment now. Replaced the broken CV axle last night with an aftermarket one from Cardone. The Toyota CV was over $500 while the Cardone was $280 all in and has a one year warranty. I figure if it's going to break then it'll likely be within the first year the way I use my truck. If that happens then I'll buy a new Toyota axle and keep the warranty replacement as a spare.

Once the CV was in I was still getting a code - C1405 right hand speed sensor. The sensor looks fine, so most likely when the ball joint and CV broke the wire leading to the sensor got stretched because of the weird angle the wheel was at. Just ordered a new wire from Toyota for $130 and it'll be here on Tuesday.

So right now I have no ABS, VSC, TRAC, or 4WD because of the sensor. Excellent timing since it started puking snow here this morning. Heavy snowfall warning for today and tomorrow, so I took the MT/Rs off and put on my winter tires - Nokian Rotiivas. They aren't anywhere near as aggressive-looking as the MT/Rs but they stick to snow like glue. There was a Subaru Outback going up a hill in front of me and spinning his wheels but I passed him no problem in 2wd. Love people who think they don't need winter tires because they have 4WD or AWD.

Please let us know how the cardone cvs do. Back at the shop, we never installed "aftermarket cvs" in lifted trucks. They could never handle the additional angle lifted trucks put them in. I've heard that the Toyota reman ones are done at a different spec.

Back in the day, I replaced cvs on my lifted 3rd gen with some aftermarket ones. As soon as I made a turn, the front end would vibrate. Going straight was fine. Replaced the cvs with Toyota ones and everything was fine.

Yeah, I only went with them because of the one year warranty, so we'll see how it goes. If it breaks from regular wear then I'll definitely replace it with a Toyota one. The $240 difference was just too much to pass up with all the other stuff I needed - winter tires, UCA ball joints, and speed sensor wire.

Replaced my front right "skid sensor wire" today. No lights on the dashboard, 4WD works again, I have ABS and all the other nannies working. The saga of the broken ball joint appears to be over.
