Intruder's build and off road pics thread

Unfortunately the Rock Monsters are on hold for now. I really need to replace my rear shocks as I don't think they'll handle all the extra weight once I put my tent on and load up for camping. Fox 2.5s with DSC adjusters will be replacing the Icon 2.0s. It is now acceptable to make "big booty" and "junk in the trunk" jokes. No Nikki Minaj allowed though.

Ok, a few build updates...

Last week I pulled out my Yaesu 857D and replaced it with a FTM-400DR. Much more user-friendly and very easy to use.

Have you had a chance to play with the FTM-400DR? Follow up review?

What are you planning on doing with the 857D?

The FTM-400DR is pretty easy to use with the touch screen. It's the same style touch screen you'd get on a Garmin GPS, not like on a phone or tablet, so it is occasionally a bit fidgety when you're trying to type. Reception is good, easy to program repeaters and all that. I already have a bunch of repeaters programmed in, while I never had a single channel stored on the 857D because it was too much of a pain. My only complaint is that it didn't come with an extension cable for the mic and the cord on it is about 6" too short if you mount under the passenger seat.

My 857D is up for sale locally.

Do you daily drive your 4Runner? How is it on the road with the mud tires? I am wondering because I'm thinking of upgrading from my 4th gen with 2WD and getting a 5th with 4WD in the next few years. Your runner would be the model that I would work on.

Looks great btw! Keep on runnin.

I feel like I just answered this question on Instagram... :D

Yes it's daily driven, but I'd say driving something with a lot of mods is a personal preference thing. Some might hate it but I don't mind. I also got the speed thing and racing off the line out of my system when I was younger. The mud tires are loud but I don't notice them much any more. Handling might not be the best but like I said I'm not much of a speed demon any more. I'd say the biggest considerations for daily driving are how far you drive every day because of reduced gas mileage and how often you parallel park or park in tight quarters. I pretty much just park far out in a spot where I can pull through to make things easier.

Yea my bad, I have been sitting at the airport all day and I was impatient. :sorry:

I was wondering because I could go down the convertible, sports car road, or the overland, modded out 4Runner when I get to college. Because I have only had experience with Toyota in the 2 years I have been driving, I would like to be comfortable and know that if something breaks, it will be cheap, (if anything does break).

Thanks for the answer btw. I really dig your 5th gen.

Went out for a rip today. Weather was a pretty mixed bag of fog, sun, rain, and snow so I didn't get a lot of pictures. Kind of funny too. We went with a bunch of Jeepers and a couple of them didn't even talk to us. They were still fairly new and didn't have much more than lift and tires so I guess they weren't keen on watching a couple of Toyotas do the obstacles they avoided. Oh well, at least the other Jeepers were cool enough.

Got tired of the nearby trails so we took a trip down to Crowsnest to do a little exploring. This trip was so last minute I actually organized it yesterday afternoon while casting dry flies at rising fish.

When we left Calgary this morning it was a bit chilly, but nothing unusual for this time of year. When we got down to Crowsnest we took a quick detour to have a look at Lundbreck falls. Then the snow started...

Despite the clouds we did get some nice views.

So that was the first trail we did. At the end of it we were in B.C. so we aired up a little, hopped onto the highway and drove back to Blairmore to have some lunch. After lunch we drove up to another trailhead, aired down again, and hit the trail.

A bit of a contrast in weather from the first trail.

After the second trail we aired up again, hit the carwash, then started driving back to Calgary. On the way north we could see a lot of low and dark clouds ahead of us. Freak storm hit with snow lowering the visibility to about 50 feet and leaving some snow and slush on the highway. After about an hour of that things cleared up again north of Nanton and the rest of the drive home was pretty uneventful.

Everything looks fantastic!

Always looking forward to the weekends when you post up new pictures. Keep up the fantastic work.

I'm just gonna leave this here.

LOL, love reading that first page of yours. I don't have time to go through the rest, but it's starting to bite me... the mod bug.

Well I had sliders from the start, going to get a lift now (was deciding Icon or just OME) and possibly just getting the OME for now. But I got the RTT, Gobi Stealth and Shrockworks skids ready to be installed after I get my lift.

how do you like your arb front bumper? Got a local guy that is selling one and thinking about it. I looked at the install manual and looks like you have to cut the factory bumper cover, which I'm not keen on.

Yes, you definitely have to cut the bumper. Mine was pretty beat up so it wasn't a difficult choice. Worst case you could go to the wreckers and look for a bumper to cut up and keep yours intact.

As for the ARB, I'm obviously biased but I wouldn't choose any other bumper over this one. It isn't perfect (I doubt the others are either) but I'll take the crush cans and pure beefiness of the ARB over Shrockworks or BudBuilt any day. The CBI is the only other one I'd consider and if I were buying right now it'd be a tough choice, but I'm sticking with what I've got.

Nice! Which springs are you going to use with those? and height? If you don't mind me asking :) I am finally ready to pull the trigger on the rears, just stuck on springs still. That particular shock (guessing it is 883-26-004) is good for 0-1.5" correct?

I've already got the Icon Overland springs in right now. Put them in at the same time as the rear bumper. I don't think they're the 883-26-004 ones. I'll check which part number later since they're way down in the storage area in my parkade.
