Mocked up some more parts today, will be looking 'finished' in short order. 2" tubing vs the 1.75" that came with the kit, and there will be a long 2" tube slider that protects the sheet metal and taillight. 2"x3" tube arms for the swingout.

To those that have aftermarket rear bumpers how did you plug the body holes that arise because of the missing bumper clips?

Went through your whole build thread. Nice work! I'm gonna have to learn how to weld here pretty soon. I just got an '03 4R and I'm trying to get ideas through looking through some good build threads.

If anybody wants to come and pick it up they can, otherwise maybe I can cut off the hinge and latch and sell those separately, scrap the rest. Really it didn't work the greatest, it was wobbly like I've mentioned before.

Yes, I'm thankful my grandpa has a welder and a nice shop I can use. It sure saves me money.

Actually, I think the frame-side mount for the hinge is still attached to some part of my frame sitting in the scrap bin, hopefully. I'll check to see if it's still salvageable. I might take more money in cutoff wheels to cut it off than what it's worth if I sold it...

Bent the 4 tubes yesterday for my rear bumper, and today I machined a tube for an FJ rear bumper similar to the one we made for my brother's, but this one will be going on another FJ. Notice we are keeping the backup sensors on the FJ bumper, with a covered access hole on the backside so you can plug them in inside the tube.

Each one of these projects is about a 1 Mountain Dew rating.

Working on my rear bumper again today, might finish it up tomorrow...

Cut it 2" back like I mentioned for tire clearance. The line to the right.

I only got this far on Sunday, had to throw a coat of paint on and install it while it was still a little sticky so I could drive to work today (Good thing too, because it's raining today). Need to finish grinding some corners and redo the stops on the swing arms because they would rub the hatch how it sits currently, I guess the swing arms need to be angled outward when locked in place to clear the hatch and not perfectly in line with eachother.

I welded new nuts to the inside of the frame where the existing ones broke off, and got the rest of the mounting for the bumper squared away so I think the rest of the work can be done without unmounting the bumper.

nice build, i have been following. i was gonna build a similar rear bumper with a 2x4 with 2x2 tubing for the carrier. i was gonna use a 5/8 tabs in a double shear on the 2x4 with bronze bushing. what was the reason for dumping the whole thing was there excessive movement? my design was very similar and wanted to pick your brain?

I cut it off jaggedly with a cutoff wheel so it wouldn't be the easiest to match back up.

I built my first one out of thin 2" tubing (roughly .080" wall) and most of the movement came from the main arm twisting. Definitely build it from 3/16 or 1/4 wall tubing. I went to a 2x3x3/16 tube for this bumper to be on the safe side. Using taller tubing you can also make the latch stronger (taller), depending on the latch design to reduce movement there too.

Are the 5/8 tab with bronze bushings for the latch? If so I really think there needs to be some sort of compressive force on the latch to hold it in place and not just a pin like I did for my first design. I would recommend the 4xinnovations latch and hinge, I liked them.

Flex test today, only rubs the front of the wheel well a little bit, and I'm on the bumpstops now whereas without the bumper clearance I was 1" above the bumpstop.

Look at the stock bushing on the lower link trying to flex! Maybe I should get some adjustable lower links to keep the tire from rubbing my door?

Been following the build, and just wanted to say everything looks great! I admire all the work you've done yourself with welding, definitely a skill I need to teach myself as it seems it's worth the savings in money to build my own stuff.

Plus, idk about getting 35's bc of the 3rd member and the use I have for my rig, but I'm definitely planning on getting 33's for my next tires based off of what I've seen from your build :biggrin1:

It's nice to be able to build your own stuff, and you can save quite a bit of money even after purchasing the equipment, but sometimes it's also nice to just click a button and have it shipped to your door, and skip the chunk of time and effort it takes to build it yourself.

You can't go wrong with a good set of 33's.

Another full weekend of fabrication.

Still need to finish sanding the corners of the bumper, but that can wait until after our trip. The spare tire is mounted 4" higher then my previous carrier, and blocks all of the back window, but gives more clearance coming off of ledges.

Fitting the fuel skid is next.

Instead of mowing my lawn today I took off my stock fuel tank skid in preparation for me measuring and making a new one.

Or maybe this one is covered under some sort of warranty? :doh:

Awesome build thread! I’ve been reading it every morning for the past few days. Quick question... is the tank bolted up to the frame by itself after the shield was removed? When I was sandblasting my undercarriage the other day, I did the shield, but would’ve preferred to have taken it off to do it better, but it looked like it was holding the tank itself in place. If it’s separate though, I’m definitely going to take it off to do a more thorough restoration on it, and get the inside too.

Tank is held to frame by two steel straps. You can safely remove the tank skid without dropping the tank, so long as those straps aren’t rusted through.
