I picked up my iphone at 2:00 EST and it took around an hour to activate because they ran across a few issues. My first impressions are WOW. The screen is beautiful, face time is amazing, and the amount of apps available is beyond belief. It can do everything and then some! Unfortunately, I could not give a fair comparison to the Droid because I never owned one. Compared to my 3G, the iphone 4 is like night and day. I hated my 3G because of the glitches. Even though the iphone 4 is more fun than my blackberry, I have nothing bad to say about my bold. Besides the limited apps, it was reliable, the battery life was amazing, and the messaging/email was top notch. So far, I don't think the redesigned email in the iphone 4 matches up to the bold. Other than that, no comparison (but what did you expect- two different markets).

Is that a clear plastic case that you got for it? Have you made any phone calls with it yet?
I know that you can add apps under each of those subcategories, but can you add more home pages?
I would like to play around with one, just to see what it's like, but we don't have an Apple store here.

I have a clear plastic case that covers the sides and back. The antenna is built into the silver piece that goes around the phone so it is important to protect. The case I added seems better than the bumpers apple offers and was less money. I think the old iphones allowed you to add 8 home pages, but I am unsure of this one. I put most of my apps in folders and deleted a lot of stupid ones. I made 2 phones calls with it and the voice quality was good. The new processor makes a huge difference because it feels so much quicker. No more lag. They may have then in Best Buy or Walmart to play with in the future.
He's not trolling, he's right. When you pick the phone up, thus blocking the antenna, you lose service all the way down to no bars.
Apple says: "This is a fact of life for every wireless phone," the company said in reference to mobile phones having reception issues when held improperly. "Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas." Needless to say, some iPhone 4 buyers (and prospective buyers) aren't taking too kindly to Apple's terse response to the issue. Of course, Apple did at least present one viable solution: "If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

It's just the manner in which he posts, I am not doubting the issue mentioned.
The issue is that the metal frame is the antenna for the phone, so contacting it incorrectly disrupts the reception. Any case will solve the issue, so it's nonexistent for me since I will get a rubber case for it. I have an Incase cover for my 3G which works great and doesn't make the phone any bulkier. I hate any case that makes the phone feel like it has a case on it.

IMO, Apple should just give away the "bumpers" much like how Nintendo did with the sleeves for Wiimotes that were flying through TVs.

It's funny you suggested that. Apple sent out this memo to every sales rep stating NO FREE BUMPERS!! Very clearly they wanted let them know.
here's an excerpt from the memo:
1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers

I understand that this is an internal memo and that it is business...but, it sure kinda sounds like a harsh way to deal with valuable customers at a time when Iphone has significant competitors. If this was 2 years ago, then i understand as they had no competitor worth pissing about. Today, esp. with AT&T already shitty coverage, customers have other options. It sounds like Apple is being a bit arrogant with their products....
Hell yes it does. They are netting over 3 billion dollars off JUST pre ordered iphone 4s, and you cant spot me a $20 accessory??

More like a $2 accessory. I think the market up on those plastic bumpers is incredibly high.

Ok, I'll give Apple partial credit for this one only.
Yes, my past and current smart phones did have a diagram on the manual of how to hold the phone optimally and not to cover the internal antenna with your fingers. HOWEVER, my past and current smart phones did NOT drop calls when held in an "inappropriate" manner.
Couple that and the fact that Apple by admission about the false representation of signal strength, IMO, is solid proof the iPhone 4 completely contradicts:
Apple's test must be just reading the number of bars present on the display.
I supported smart phones and regular phones alike for a wireless carrier for more than 3.5 years. We tested theses phones with RF testers for dropped calls, RF performance, etc. but we NEVER once told a customer learn how to hold your phone and that's why you're dropping calls.

It looks like the reception issue is related more to software than how you hold it. Whats happening is the phone shows full bars when in reality it may only have a few. When you hold the phone a certain way, it starts to show the "true" reception and the bars will drop.
I have a few friends with the iPhone 4 (mine will be here this week) and theirs don't lose a single bar no matter how we hold it. We have held it every possible way for minutes at a time, and no change has ever occurred with the reception, and there haven't been any dropped calls.
Apple is planning a software patch, which should fix the false reception readout. Those with poor coverage areas will not have the illusion of full bars.
Gripping a phone does have some impact on reception, but not enough to go from full bars to one or two like some people have experienced with the iPhone 4.
