ipod issues?

just picked up a beautiful 2010 trail edition in silver, love it (replacing 2000 blazer ZR2). i plugged my ipod nano (2003-ish) into the USB port. the screen on the ipod says "OK to disconnect" with a big check mark. tried pressing the aux button, nothing. help my ass! thank you.

dumb question: Is your version of your ipod compatible with the HU (is it mentioned in your owners manual?)

I saw on another thread you have to hit AUX twice. But I really have no clue. My Trail is still in Japan.
