Is $15k Enough?

Oh I think if you used a federal loan for a truck and they found out (I dont know how they would), you would be in deep doodoo...I think, not sure

I just took out a loan for mine and my interest rate is 2.49%. The interest rate on my student loans range from 6-9%
So even if you wouldnt get in trouble for buying a truck with student loan money, its most likely cheaper to go through a bank (BTW it was Pentagon Federal Credit Union :thumb3:)

No Im not taking a school loan out, Im too old for that...Im still paying back $30k for a masters degree I got 12 years ago! Plus taking out minor loans to pay tuition for this masters, which should be about $12k total which isnt too bad, its way cheaper than my last masters!

A 4 Runner would be NICE...and my girl has two kids, so I need something to get them outdoors more, and a 3rd or 4th Gen 4Runner would be perfect. I wanted a 4 door Taco, but my girl is being logical in WTF do I need a pickup bed for right now, and an SUV is better to throw gear, cargo, etc and it be lockable and easily reachable. Im so used to pickups i miss them, but yea I live in Manhattan Beach, Im going to grad school, and there isnt any hunting close by nor do I have a quad or anything, no need for a pickup....recently sold a gorgoues 87 GMC shortbed that was mint...loved it but having two lifted vehicles with these gas prices, you might question I actually have any education at all hahah

Well student loans can be used to cover transportation. But who knows. I would never tell them the reason why I need the money is to buy a 2004 4runner you know?

I think after I get my BA, Im gonna go for my masters in geography. Even though I'm 26 now. It will probably take 2-3 years to get the BA then maybe another 2 for the masters so I should be about 30. Not to bad I guess.

I really want a 3rd gen more now cuz I will have more money left over. If get a 4th gen, I will have almost no money left. The thing is that its hard to find a low mileage 3rd gen now. I saw a 1996 with only 50k. But who knows if he rolled back the mileage and plus hes asking 12 for it. Kind of steep considering its a 15 year old car. 2001-2002 4runner is what I will be looking for along with a 4th gen if I can find one at a good price. And if I'm really lucky, a 1st gen double cab Tacoma. Heck, I may consider an extended cab Prerunner.

Lucky. You probably awesome credit. 6-9% doesnt sound too bad though but, I never taken out an auto loan before.
 
I forget if its LA or OC CL, but there is a SWEET double cab Tacoma, an 02 or 03 I think, with mild lift and new mudders....been looking at so much stuff I forget

Yea I train right by where you live, Velocity Sports Performance, its in the industrial plaza right before MB Blvd meets Inglewood.

2.9% nice....I have great credit so maybe I should check out that bank haha....a few more months the Rubicon is paid off and I could afford a car payment....but I did take out loans to pay tuition since I wont have to pay interest until Im done with masters, and if I go for PhD might stretch that out even longer haha...

Parking is an issue too living in a beach town without a driveway, and street sweeping every damn day....when I had a truck and Jeep, I had to shuffle the truck every morning or drive around all over looking for parking sometimes...lucky the Jeep fits (barely) in the garage.

Yea I like 3rd Gen 4Runners....but then after reading this thread, I read some on 4th gen, and I do like the idea of a nice V8 :-) Im a power snob! And if I get a 4Runner it will be more my "family" and commuter vehicle, and the Rubicon for harder wheeling trips. So a little luxury would be nice haha, and some balls with a V8! Maybe a mild 2-3" lift, slightly bigger ATs, exhaust, some lights and call it a day! Dont know enough about Toyotas nor anything about 4th gen, but if Detroit True Tracs are available might be nice to throw them in front/rear since for me it would be more the long distance travel vehicle and light trails....lockers in the Rubi for the hard stuff

Haha yeah thats how the city gets revenue by having those street sweepers come by. They know damn well a lot of people dont have driveways or garages to put their vehicles in and people sometimes forget or are sleeping when they come.

That V8 is one of the advantages of the 4th gen. I bet its all smooth, quiet, and powerful. When the time comes, I'll give one a test spin. Lifts are sick as hell but, I'm a starving student and I would imagine my MPG's dropping even further.
 
Yea It would be better for me not to lift one if I get it....I wouldnt have the cash right now anyhow....if I did anything maybe a cheap leveling kit just so it didnt have a rake, and whenever it needed new tires grab a small lift...

Yea Id love a V8! Havent had time due to a class, but wondering if guys are doing any simple bolt ons to those Toyota V8s that give them some increase in mpg/HP/torque....exhausts, chips/tuners, intakes?
 
Not a whole lot you can do to the V8 to increase hp/torque etc. Intake and exhaust might add a little. The V8 is a sick engine and IMO doesn't need a whole lot. I love the response of the engine and how smooth the tranny is. If you can spring it, get the V8. You won't regret it.
 
Finding one for that price here in CA will be tough. Maybe an 03/04 with close to 100k or a 2wd. Other than that plan on going out of state.

Out of state purchases are easy. Go pick it up (make sure it is 50 state smog legal first), bring it back, get it smogged, bring it to the DMV for a VIN check and get your reg.

There is a 4x4 Tacoma extended cab on CL now for $5k+, 130k miles or so. Its a 4 banger so dont know if thats why its so cheap.

Oh when I first moved here, I went to San Diego to buy an 87 GMC shortbed that was SWEET...I mean SWEET...I applied to a PhD at WVU and if I got in I was planning on keeping it and the Jeep...but staying in Cali for grad school means I can be screwing around with two lifted inefficient rigs....had to sell her, but after using her for 2 years as my DD, sold it for over a grand more than I paid...so Im all for doing San Diego if you needed to find a deal! I did it!

Doesn't matter to me. If I do get lucky and find a 4x4, I wanna go offroading.

Thats not bad. Probably a 98-2000. I have been able find some 2nd gen access cab prerunner Tacos under 15 with decent mileage.

Im not from Cali, so its hard for me to justify the poor gas mileage of a 2x4 pickup or SUV....if Im going to have a big bulky inefficient vehicle, I want to be able to wheel it, or drive it in the snow, etc....but Im sort of a redneck so take it for what its worth...Ive never owned ANYTHING in my life other than 4x4...literally Ive never owned a car...and more than half of my vehicles end up lifted haha...

$12500 seems doable, and who knows I think Ive seen this one before for sale a long while ago....go offer $11k and see if he bites!

I seen this guy for a while. It has over 143k miles which is a little too much for me. Theres this dealership down in San Diego that has an all black limited 03 for under 11k. Haha I seriously need to stop looking at these ads till about January when I officially will have all the money I need to make the deal.

I guess I'm a city boy thats why I really never thought about a 4x4. But you guys on here have made me think twice and would be more than happy to get one now. The only concern I have is that insurance rates are usually higher.

Man Im getting tempted as school gets closer to snag one if I find a deal....what do you think is a "deal" in our area for a 4x4 V8?

The one in the link earlier in the post I told you to check out was like $16k for a V8 2004 4x4 with 60k miles. Man loooking at the dealer costs around here they would charge $20k for that thing, and autotrader and Craigslist other ones in that range of mileage are asking $18-19k......so would $16k be a "steal" for that 04 V8?

I emailed the guy, too bad its freaking 1.5 hours from us...jeeze talk about looking at CL in your area and finding out the vehicle is a 1.5 hour drive!

Well for one under 100k, I would think a deal would be in the 14-16 range.

Cant you haggle a little more at dealers? Like if you see something 18 can you talk them down to 16 or 15? Because they mark up the prices? Hmmm. You should try to talk him down to 15 then it would be a steal. In my opinion. Now that I been looking on numerous listings and researching on sites like this, I'm getting good at determining whats a good deal for a 4runner.

It kinda pisses me off though. Seeing 4th gens go for 18-20 with 100k on them. Seriously? Dont get me started on the Tacomas. They're even worse.
 
tried to go this weekend, even on Sunday 405 was a nightmare and I turned around....going to try this Saturday morning....maybe Ill offer him $14,500 and hope he says $15k and strike a deal then go for it
