Is 2022 TRD Sport worth Moding into Off-Road???

Hi,

I bought a 2022 TRD Sport 4runner 3 months ago without knowing what i bought at the time. I was a bit miss led by the sales agent when he introduced me to the model, and due to the shortage of the available TRD off-road and TRD PRO at the time, i was quick to make the decision of buying the damn car without doing full research(the blame is my own).

Anyways, i wanted a off-road car, and I am seriously considering moding this TRD sport into off-Road use… is it worth it? Is it worth moding a “Limited equivalent” model into Off-road?

Tires, Bumpers, rock sliders, shocks, lifts, etc… it roughly adds up to +-$15K if I DIY most of it. But is this TRD sport off-Road material and worth the Mods?

Just because it doesn't have the off road package (crawl control and lockers) doesn't mean it cant do and go where most goes.

I say mod it and if you feel you need to add lockers later on, that's doable.

TRD Sport is perhaps the stupidest thing Toyota has done with the 4Runner since the 4 cylinder they had in California that one year. It's completely pointless. It would have been one thing if they gave it the Limited's AWD system, but they didn't. Instead it's just an SR5 that looks like a Limited, and it's stupid and dumb and Toyota should be ashamed of themselves.

That being said, you already have it. And it's essentially an SR5. And SR5s get modded into off roaders quite successfully. The biggest thing SR5 owners add is the rear locker. You don't need any of the other TRD Off Road cheater robot crap. And since you should be changing the tires anyway, while you're at it you might as well get rid of those stupid TRD Sport wheels which are BAD, BAD, BAD for off roading and overall simply a stupid idea in the first place for any conceivable scenario. Seriously, a 4Runner isn't a race car. No car on the road is a race car. Get yourself some sidewall on every car you own.

I despise the TRD Sport. It's essentially a rolling George Carlin joke about stupid people.

Don’t let that guy get you down, easy to talk shit on a vehicle you don’t own. You have a 4Runner that is more than capable of being modded into whatever you want it to be. Plenty of built 4Runners without a rear locker. And you can always add one in the future if you decide it’s for you.

I never said it wasn't capable of being modded into whatever. It's just that it's a slap in the face by Toyota to offer such a vehicle. It's tone deaf and serves no purpose other than to be bling on a budget.

I haaaaaaaaaate the TRD Sport trim with a passion. At least with the SR5 you could have kept the original wheels and upgraded the tires if you were on that much of a budget. A far better monetary investment.

I have to agree with you on that one, Toyota should just focus more on TRD off-road and Pro Production, instead of wasting their manufacturing capacity on shit models like TRD Sports. If i want a city driving car, i would have just bought limited or any other damn SUV. But my goal was off road, and this half ass model made me feel cheated and incomplete.

Fortunately for us 4runner owners, the residual value is pretty good, I bet i can sell this car back into the market at original price right now, and review my options again.

I have to agree with you on that one, Toyota should just focus more on TRD off-road and Pro Production, instead of wasting their manufacturing capacity on shit models like TRD Sports. If i want a city driving car, i would have just bought limited or any other damn SUV. But my goal was off road, and this half ass model made me feel cheated and incomplete.

All things considered, TRD Sport isn't anything to scoff at. You've still got a great vehicle capable of a lot and just as capable of being modded into as capable of a vehicle as a modded SR5 is.

If you're okay with adding a rear locker somewhere down the road, then I'd say just keep the stupid thing. You'd be in good company with SR5 owners on that front. Adding a locker is possible. You'd have to get new wheels, but if you got an SR5 and wished to change the wheels then you aren't really any worse off with your current bling bling rims. You'd be changing them anyway.

One thing that I hadn't considered is the Limited body style. I don't really know one way or the other how that affects offroading when stock and the feasibility body mods like bumpers if you wish to go that route. I doubt it would affect anything significant, but looking at heavily modded Limiteds might not be a bad idea.

The biggest expense i am considering to do first are the steel bumpers. Yes the Limited low profile bumper is a drag, I’ve took the car to off road twice already and almost racked the back bumper lol. So i better change them and sell the OE Bumpers before i destroy them…
