Is it time to change my air filter? You decide

My air filter has 15,000 miles on it. I took it out and took these pictures. Should it be replaced? You tell me.

Ever thought of going with a K&N filter (or similar) that will last the life of your 4Runner? I know everyone has their opinion when it comes to these cleanable, reusable, re-oilable filters, but I put one in for around $50 a few years ago and have only had to clean it once so far (you only clean it once every 50,000 under normal conditions). Works great. This way you aren't spending $20 everytime you need a new one and aren't throwing another thing in a landfill. Just trying to save you some money!

If you decide to put one in it, keep your old air filter for temporary use when you have to wash and dry your K&N (or similar) and have to air dry it for 24 hours. This way you can still use your vehicle and not have to worry.

It really depends if your filter is dirty. Lots of factors to consider, so common sense will decide even though the manual recommend 20k to 30k or yearly.

Why not? Lets see, 1) It sounds great under the hood when accelerating
2) The filter last for a lifetime (only have to recharge)
3) You gain a lil Horsepower and quicker throttle response

I think thats three major plus'. . . . at least thats what sold me

Dont forget to change the filter inside the runner behind the glove box....opened mine and it was full of leaves pinestraw and all sorts of stuff.

Replace that and you will notice good amount of airflow increase if yours is dirty/old.

A paper air filter performs its intended job better as it gets a little dirtier. Of course there is a point where it's too dirty. Use a K&N, I suppose if you want dirt in your engine. Stick with the OEM filter.
