is something wrong with my abs?

So this is my first storm with the 4runner. And wow the brakes are terrible. They really just make a ton of noise but sure as hell don't stop the truck. Its bad. Are all abs equipped 4runners this bad or is something wrong?

My tires aren't the best as I'm waiting for a new set, but this thing slides like hell and the abs seems like its just fighting me rather then pulsing the brakes.

Ultimately all that stops you in winter conditions is 4 bits of rubber - you can have whatever fancy electronics and drive systems you like, nothing will compensate for tires not suited to the job. Buy a set of winters and you won't believe the difference. Ask your insurer if they will give you a break on your premiums if you do it as well.

ABS is designed to allow you to continue steering when the tires lose traction, not help you stop faster. If they were allowed to just lock up, you'd keep skidding in the direction you were headed, no steering input could be made. Tires really are the difference here, ABS kicks in much less frequently, and much less intrusively when you have better tires.

I guess my tires are more junk then I thought, because I had the wheel cut, brake pedal to the floor and I could feel the breaks pulsing but the truck was not slowing down .

Maybe the 4runner is a bit heavier then other pickups and trucks I've owned, but it realy seemed like the abs was doing more harm then good.

ABS increases stopping distance, as it keeps releasing the brakes when you are trying to clamp them down. If everyone was a good driver, and their vehicles were in proper running order, then we wouldn't need driver's aids like this. It really sounds like your tires are the issue, and driving in snow is a game changer when you aren't used to it.

ya thats on my list of things to do aswell, I have a set of tundra 17" wheels sitting in the garage, but I was hoping to stick it out untill I got my tax return to buy tires...
