Is the 4runner Trail Edition Too Complex??

Thanks. In 4hi, 4lo, 2hi, which ones in the taco?

Mine's a PreRunner (a 2WD with the 4x4 stance or a 4x4 without the front axle and transfer case, depending how you want to look at it). It's a 2WD that sits higher.

From my reading at ToyotaNation, it appears the 4WD Tacoma's can only lock the rear diff in 4LO without doing the mod.

More sales? BTW, with a 4:1 LOW range, you won't need no stinking CRAWL...4:1 is super crawl in itself! :) Fine, i agree...4:1 is too much to ask for (out of Toyota), but damn it, why is KDSS a $4000 option on an off-road specific vehicle???? This reminds me of Ford making a Performance Pkg (that really makes a difference!) for the 2010 Taurus SHO...WTF is SHO for if it comes with wimpy brakes, gears, and suspension?!!

I agree completely. I wanted KDSS without the NAV. For the price I paid for my TE it should have at least one of them. I could not justify the additional 4K. This is the only part of my 2010 experience where I think I didnt get a good deal. Everythin else I am happy with. Now if I can only shut up the damn seatbelt alarm!!!:crybaby:

Hi all. Resurrecting an old thread. It still comes up in searches so to me it's still relevant.

I've been learning my 11 TE with KDSS for a year or two, and I'd like to add to the original topic:

All these extra features are just more tools in the shed. If one doesn't do the job, try another.

I've had several scenarios where 4l and locked diff. Didn't get me through. At that point I kicked back, turned on crawl control and let it figure out the best way through. It's there for me when I'm at the limits of my skill. It's noisy, I don't want to use it (except maybe to show off sometimes), but I'm sure glad I have it. It's very capable for that rare instance, and it beats getting out and winching.

As far as multi terrain select goes, I haven't found much usefulness in it. I'm also finally learning how to use it and what it does. Apparently, knowing that matters.

The KDSS is not just awesome for offroad, but adds incredible stability on road too. That sway bar is enormous!
If you lift your truck though, you might get some weird height issues as the sway bar has a fixed link on passenger's side and a dynamic link on the drivers side. With my 3"lift my truck stands taller on the driver side - with no passengers.

KDSS is not always paired with NAV. It's a regional thing. Apparently in places like Colorado you can have one without the other. I would skip the NAV system personally, at least on 2010-13 models. Manufacturers touch screens tend to be many years behind simple mobile devices these days. Why don't they just put a tablet mount there and build an app? I digress.

Test drive it. If you like it and need it's capabilities, go for it. If you'll never take it off road, well maybe you shouldn't get a Siberian Husky to jog around the block with.

Shift on the fly into 4h can be done up to 50mph I believe. These trucks are fun for desert driving at speed.

Shitting from 2h to 4h is an electronic switch. The computer controls when it things everything is lined up right to engage in 4h.
Shifting into 4l is a mechanical linkage to the transfer car. There's a neutral between 4h and 4l on the transfer case. If you take too long to go through that neutral partition into 4l, gears will grind(or dogs, anyways).
4h - switch. 4l - mechanical.

I'm looking forward to giving the keys to my daughter in 15 years.
