Is the lug nut thread engagement sufficient??

Mounting up some Icon Alloy's that are hub centric and purchased the lug style that is recommended by Icon. Went with Gorilla 21133BC 12mmx1.5 - 1.36" length - non ET

To me this thread engagement seems short. There are certainly some valid concerns running ET and Icon specifically says not to. Should I be concerned about this?

Google has a lot of hits on this topic. Search "minimum thread engagement for alloy wheels". Modern Tire Dealer writes, "At the minimum, thread engagement length must be equal to or greater than the diameter of the fastener. In other words, if the stud is 1/2-inch in diameter, the nut must engage onto the stud by at least 1/2-inch." Check to see what the other hits say about this topic.

Also perform this search, "minimum thread engagement for icon alloy wheels forums" where the last word "forums" gives you hits of a variety of enthusiast forums. You should be able to find enough information to either be OK with it ... if not, you'll have sound reasoning to cite when you ask Icon.

Perhaps the lug nuts supplied by Icon are not deep enough for extra length studs. Tapped threads can not be cut all the way to the bottom of the nut.

I hear ya, I've been reading and searching. Not trying to be the guy that asks a question with a super obvious answer. Every thread has contradicting information and turns into an ET vs non-ET debate. I'm asking on here, as I know others here are running Icon's.

Lug nuts are engaged for 6 full rotations, that's just not enough. Based on what I can measure with a caliper I'm getting about 10mm of engagement.

6 rotations sounds a bit short. I had to swap out my lugs when I bought my wheels. It was easy to swap but a pain because the lugs you can buy are too long so had to cut them down first. I forget the aftermarket name but they are high quality for racing and supposed to be for a Lexus. So, at least I was able to get rid of the cheap easy to break Toyota lugs. All that is for the front. The rear had enough engagement so I did not swap those, plus with the rear it is tricky to get the lugs pressed in and out.

The front studs are too short for use with aftermarket wheels, IMHO. You can replace them with the longer studs for the rear axle.

If the ET nuts fit, I would use them.

For proper engagement on aftermarket wheels I would replace with longer studs. I believe the rear 4runner studs are a little longer or do what I did and replace with Matrix studs from the 2008 AWD model. I believe they are 55mm in length. Same size as ours just longer. It doesn’t take long to change out studs on our front end.
