Are you talking about the Vehicle Shield protection? With the Rhino Lining type coating on the underbody? I say yes it is worth it, I test drove one without the coating, and then mine with the coating and mine was much much quieter in terms of road noise... Definatly worth it if you ask me.
They sell it for $600 up by me and explained that its almost like an acryllic coating that has a lifetime warranty against rust and chipping. I need that where I live because the roads are salted almost daily from snow. I have an 04 and the undercarriage is already rusted to hell, i think its def worth it!

I've just spent some time under the vehicle with oil based black enamel and a brush. After two years in Mich some of the weld seams and brackets on the frame rails show rust. I even dressed up the brake calipers.
I don't want that black tar junk sprayed indiscriminately all over the bottom of the car.

its much more than just the undercoat ie all doors and under the hood
i am planning on keeping my 2003 for as long as possible and so far is looking great even with all the dam salt on our roads

Being needed is a question for discussion, but I had my 2008 Ziebarted for 760 USD. That included rust proofing, undercoating, sound deadening and paint sealent. At 900 USD, you are being ripped.

For those who DIY undercoating, there are some disadvantages.
It's impossible to cover every area on the vehicle with this method and hard to reach places are left unprotected, often these are the areas that are most prone to corrosion.
It's effective as long as the protective surface is not damaged. In real terms this is not possible and where damage occurs, no matter how small, rust will occur. Cracking at the body joints, stone chips, scratches, peeling and brittleness of the undercoating can result in water getting trapped between the metal and the undercoating allowing rust to form where you can't see it until it's too late. This is why many rust proofing and undercoating companies recommend that you get your car or truck inspected and re-sprayed every year. This, of course, costs you more money.
Even if your vehicle already has some type of undercoating it will probably still rust.
Me personally would rather have the professionals do it right. Remove the old undercoat, clean and dry under there, and re-apply a new one (preferably at least 2 coats). Kinda like what they put on truck beds.
