Is there something wrong with our transmissions?

I'm not sure, but I think I have a problem with my transmission: I have to continually shift it myself. :noidea:

My auto had 200k and shifted smooth , did 80 on highway multiple times. Now with 5 speed in. No more worries about the milkshake.

OP, you should consider selling. These transmissions are ticking time bombs. I towed a jet ski and it started slipping after 10 miles. Not to mention the pink milkshake that happens all the time. IMO this transmission cannot handle the power and weight of this vehicle.

How involved is flushing a transmission?

To do a true flush you need to take it to a shop and have them hook it up to a machine. I had mine done at the beginning of the year and I took it to the dealer. Jiffy Lube will do it as well, but their price was the same as the dealer so I decided to take mine to the dealer.

I think what it boils down to that our engines are so reliable and well built, we have nothing to pick on but the transmission. So we direct all our attention to cooling, towing, temperature readings, etc.

It lasts as long an any other Toyota/Honda/Nissan transmission I've ever owned.

Just went and looked at the receipt. It was $196 out the door. Included the flush, flush kit, ATF, labor and tax.

If you do a flush take it to the dealer or someone that will use the correct fluid.

Considering the condition my 4runner was in when I bought it, I'm pretty sure the tranny has never been flushed, or if it has it was many years ago. @240k miles, I'd say its a safe bet it needs it.
