Is this engine noise normal?

I can't exactly locate it but it sounds like it's coming from either the belts or the fan. It sounds like it's just having a hard time turning or something I'm not exactly sure. It just sounds "off" when it idles. I used belt ease and sprayed down all the belts.. I have a video clip and you can hear it best at the very beginning and very end of the clip. I might need a new clutch for the fan? Not sure

Hmm - that is different.

I'm sure plenty more will chime in but I don't think its normal, comparing it to the sounds mine makes. I mostly hear fan roar at first then it calms down (unless it's 105 outside!). Your vid sounds like a bearing is going out somewhere in the front of engine, have you done the 'spot' listening with a diagnostic stethoscope maybe?

Could be a bearing. In the video in sounds like it goes up and down. Bearing noises tend to be more steady in pitch, but it could just be the way the mic is picking up the sound. Easiest would be to take the timing belt cover of and look at that first. There also two bearings in there (idler and tensioner) Then you have your fan clutch bracket bearing and finally any of the accessories (ALT, PS, AC ) As someone else suggested, one of those stethoscopes would be handy or else you'll have to loosen belts and spin each component by hand until you find the guilty culprit. Oh God I would hope not! That would require a major overhaul. Don't think that's your problem.

I have had a timing belt tensioner seize on another vehicle causing the timing belt to break. Thankfully it wasn't an interference motor. We're good in the 4runners that way as well, but just pointing out that those tensioners and idlers do go bad. It's a good idea to replace whenever you change the timing belt.

Yeah I hope not either. I didn't think it was anything that big.. Maybe just a clutch on the fan.

I know it's not the ac or power steering .. I'm going to change the timing belt sooner than later and ill just do all the other ones as well
