Is this normal?

get a roll of weed eater line, and feed it up the drains from the bottom.
double check that the line comes out the drain. perhaps the hose has popped off a fitting. or is just very clogged, and water is going where its not supposed to.


earlier this year, I opened the rear hatch, after not having it open for several months, several very wet months. as soon as it was all the way up, water started pouring out of 2 very small holes just at the top. WTF.

looking at the bottom of the rear door, there were a couple rubber plugs. I just removed them, so the water can drain as it gets inside. im not sure why they were in place to begin with. I haven't noticed any more water in there since.

Haven't you posted numerous times that you have had water in your truck and your mats were wet? Seems like you never tracked down the original problem either.

There was a thread a long time ago. But I narrowed that down to the type of wire loom I used on a wire that goes through the grommet. I fixed it with a lot of RTV. And that was only driver side.

Now it's passenger side. And driver side rocker panel FILLED WITH WATER. something is clogged up. And I'm not sure where to look

at the end of the ac drip line, there is supposed to be an aluminum tube that is bent at a 90-degree angle

when the rain stops, why not remove the carpet and then pour a cup of water in each of the two moonroof front drains to see if the water goes straight to the floor drain holes in the rocker panel or it just floods. if it floods, then most probably the holes in the floor where the moonroof drains could be clogged with dirt.

I'm going to try to express my self in the best way I can lol.

So when I bed line my rocker panels. I bed lined the bottom part. Let's call this the pinch area. And maybe I clogged up the little drain areas ? But I did this like a year ago. So I don't think this is the issue.

Another thing, I recently sprayed Eastwood heavy duty grease type inside the rocker panels. (Maybe this could have clogged up the little drain holes ?)

Can someone verify that the sun roof drains into the rocker panels and then water finds its way to the drain holes ? By looking at the rocker panels. There are area that are shaped like drain areas.

I stuck a little rubber tube inside the sun roof drain holes. The front ones. I blew air and poured water down. It seems as if water from the sun roof drains "into the rocker panels and then drips outside". Does this sound normal ?

To my understanding. The sun roof drains are short and water runs into the rocker panels then out the little pinch weld drain areas. "The front does drain out gaps in the pinch welds on the rocker." Quote

Clean inside rocker panels ? May god be on my side. I'll be posting pics soon of how I extended the sunroof drains "straight to outside". Rather then into the rocker panels. Explains why rocker panels upfront rot out.

What I did is I stuck a thin rod and loosened up the drains and water drained out.

The front drains for the sunroof exit in the rocker panels, this is why there is water in there.*You need to pull that tape off the bottom of the rockers so they can drain properly. then use some kind of wire and gently clean the drains out from the sun roof. I honestly think all your water issues will be solved if you can get your sunroof to drain properly. If the water cannot go out where it is supposed to it will go somewhere else where it is not supposed to go

Yeah I agree. I hate to ask. But could look under your truck to see if those holes are plugged on your 4runner ?

I've actually yesterday extended the driver side drain with a coupling and extra hose and ran it outside the rocker panel to the outside !! I'm hoping to clean this mod up and then there will be 0 water draining into the rocker panel.

Ok, so ive been very busy. And honestly I believe that I have came up with a easy solution to avoid the sun roof from draining into your rocker panels. If you ask me, this is stupid. Im sure 99% this is why the rocker panels rot out! Toyota extended their drains in the back to the outside. But the fronts... come on? really into the rocker panels?

I went to Home Depot and got a coupling 3/8 and 3/8 hose.


Remove the driver side plastic kick panel, and you'll see a yellow sponge. Take that out and you'll see a drain tube. Pull it out. Its not easy takes little effor but don't be afraid.


If you look down there, at a certain angle. You will see a small opening. Carefully snake your new tube into that hole.


Outside of the truck. Behind the plastic fender wheel cover there is a small gray/silver plug. Its plastic, so it does not water tight seal it. Remove it! Most likely you will damage it lol.

So, in this picture you can see the new clear tube. Through that hole.


You use pliers and grab the clear new tube and pull it threw that hole. Then slide a new rubber grommet over it and tightly into the rocker panel hole. Yes, i know the 90 degree bend on that tube is not pretty. But believe me. The tube is strong and thick. There is a good gab for the water to drain out.



I also put RTV around the tube where it comes out of the grommet to seal it little better. The grommets inner hole was slightly larger then the new tube.





I tested the sun roof drain.


Good tip. Once you pull the new tube out. Then connect it to the original drain tube with your coupling. And it wouldn't hurt to wrap them both in electrical tape after they are connected. Makes it so when you pull the white tube out side you, the coupling won't slide out of the original drain tube. Self exploratory.

Same concept on the passenger side

You see the hole! thats the hole you need to put the rube through in order to see it outside the other hole.

I tested it about 30 times and every time the water drained out nicley and DIRECTLY OUTSIDE! Once the plastic fender cover is back on. You cannot see the drain tube

I just patched a couple holes in my rockers and am hoping to extend their lives as long as possible - and my pinch welds are somewhat corroded

Holding up good. Just need to really maintain them because dirt can easily get in the tubes because the tire is right there. However this eliminates any water from draining into your rocker panels. Thus keeping them dry. I’m sure someone could think of a more clever way. Some sort of 90 degree attachment to eliminate the 90 degree kink. Only issue is there’s very little space to do anything.
