While I was under the back of my truck finishing up the CB antenna cable routing I saw this tell tale leak.:wtf:

Smells and feels like gear oil. None on the rest of the wheel so it must of just started. Heading to Death Valley in a couple days and traveling out of state until then. Short of checking the fluid level in the rear diff and topping off, anything I should watch for, since i won't have a chance to do the seals?

Short of topping off the fluid there isn't much you can do until you are able to get in and change the seals. Have you extended the diff breather yet? If not I would do that before the trip or at least make sure your breather is clean and working correctly. You have disc brakes so you shouldn't have to worry too much about it messing those up(unless it gets on the rotor and gums up the pads?).

Yep, the PO installed the extended diff breather. How do I check to see if it clean and working correctly?

To check it you will have to pull it down and look at the valve/fitting on the end of the hose. Depending on how it was connected you could remove it form the hose and blow into it. If the air escapes it is functioning correctly, if it doesn't try cleaning it and testing again.

Sky Manf backets and gm disks. Mine don't have parking brake tabs you can get them, but running the cables to get enough take up is really problematic. Eventually I'll install a line lock or other system.

BTW-just needed to add a little gear oil to the rear diff. Extended breather is clear and working well, so I think it was just the seals time. Hopefully I can just replace the seals and not the whole shabang.:ak472:

Yea it looks like you caught it just after it started. Replace the seals and you should be good to go. Unless you have the time and money to do barrings and all that I wouldn't worry about it.
 
Bikerjosh, how much of a gain did you get with the rear disks? i went through reading some old posts (2008) and they were saying it was a huge ordeal to swap them out and that you didn't gain very much. Was this your experience or have the kits improved over the years?
I have 15 inch wheels so the Tundra caliper swap in the front would be a much larger expense which is why i am thinking about this. If it all were to work out and be worth it, it looks like it could be done for abound 500 bucks. any insight would be great.

the front brakes do all the work anyhow;)
 
looks like a seal leak i wouldnt worry about it, you still got time, when it leak really bad then you have to change the seal and the bearings, since the gear oil already ran through the bearings and all the grease is gone. but toyota bearings are tough as nails they will last you a long time
