I hate the fact that we go about trying to police the world. It was a huge mistake pulling out early in Iraq, since it was already started, especially now that's its all gone back to hell. They weren't ready to be on their own. We probably should not have been there in the first place.
I can't thank enough the ones that went in and fought and the ones that sacrificed their lives for our country. It's just sad to see that our progress there is now lost.

What service members have more than anything else is the experience with our own eyes. How many civilians saw what was really happening from the armchair of America? Very little. For the most part everyone back home saw what the media wanted you to see good, bad, or indifferent.

...equal opportunity!? are you kidding me. stop right here before you go any further and save face. do you even know what EO is about? its about the same thing as grading of the curve... you have a percentage of whites, blacks, mexicans, women, asians, gays, transgenders, handicapped ect ect ect. and you need to employ the correct applicable ratio if them all. it does not matter if they are more qualified, no you need to have them. and that means that someone some where is gonna be given a job they did not earn or do not deserve because they are not qualified other than by the fear or EO. i see it all the time. the fact is there are jobs women can not do, but have solely because she is a female and equal opportunity says she gets that job even though she can not do it -the same goes for a man doing a womans job. then there are jobs that one person is more than qualified to do but no because the color of his/her skin or his/her ethnic background, or sexual preference ect they not given the job and instead it is given to someone less suited for the job. equal opportunity has ruined this country more so than bush, or obama or any president we have ever had. EO is one of the single worst things to happen to us i can think of....

Well said. Exactly why I will never apply to become an officer ever again. If the individual performs above those of his/her peers promote or add responsibility. If the opposite is true then keep them where they are at and replace them at the earliest opportunity or provide training.

Now to focus on the topic at hand. Should we go back in? Only if we can fight this time. ROE's killed the war from being one in OIF and are still killing it currently.

However looking back on the past the middle east has been meddled with for quite some time. When the Ottoman Empire was dissolved and split after WWI it wasn't the natural pecking order according to them. What is the pecking order? Who bloody knows at this point. I was also ignorant of what happened until recently when I decided to read a book instead of listening to what the media/government/conspiracy theorists/feminists/conservatives/liberals/Russians/British/Canadians/Mexicans (If I forgot anyone I apologize) said.

I picked up Lawrence in Arabia by Scott Anderson. Still finishing it but so far a lot of manipulation has been done in the political arena and honestly I would venture to say that it is one of the primary causes of this current situation. Is this book the authority on the subject? Maybe not the authority but the facts are being laid out in the order that they happened so that decisions made at that time seemed sensible.

All in all though. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. That's the real problem.

Exactly the reason for my post. At one point, the USA thought it was a good idea to arm & train Osama bin Laden & the Muhajadeen (sp?). The only way of our this stuff is some bit of prosperity... As evidenced by Vietnam of late.

The US won't be able to stop ISIS (who is using US guns, trucks and supplies) from the air.

And the Shiite's in their fortress Baghdad seem unwilling or incapable to take back any of the lost territory.

When ISIS took Mosal it overran over 60,000 US armed and paid Iraqi central government troops who were over 10x better armed and outnumered the ISIS insurgents 20:1.

The Iraqi government troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts. They gave up the war from the beginning and this just shows what a waste the last ten years of "building an army has been" in Iraq. How does the phrase go "great weapons for sale, never fired, only dropped once" - yeah I think that is it.

Surprise .... American (or anyone else) cannot build an Army for a people. We tried to do the same thing with the South Vietnamese and it failed. We tried to do it in Afghanistan and it has failed. The Iraqi and Afghanistan army is not more trustworthy or battle ready than the South Vietnamese were. I'd suggest anyone who hasn't already done so watch the HBO movie "A Bright Shining Lie", it is based on the popular non-fiction book about US operations in Vietnam and training a South Vietnamese Army. In the end foreign peoples simply cannot be trained to fight in the manner that the US attempts to accomplish. It is always a failure and one of the largest wastes of government $$$ ever spent.

Fast forward back to Iraq ..... because of how they abandonded their posts and gave up the city, ISIS personnel were able to seize over $500 Million in cash and bank notes from the government banks in Mosal and they seized ALL of the cities US weapons including rocket launchers, US anti-tank weapons and shoulder fired missiles that can shoot down planes and helicopters. THEY HAVE THE US WEAPONS. Now they will use those weapons in Syria and in the Kurdish region. I think they will attack Baghdad last, only after having defeated Syria.

Iraq is already split up. It will never be one country again. The only thing that can be done now is to arm the Kurds so the US still has a footprint in the area. Also the administration should stop funding "rebels in Syria" because they are the same damn ISIS rebels who are fighting in Iraq. The incompetence is mind-blowing.

Totally agree, it will be very interesting to see where it goes from here. When ISIS goes under ground, and they will to avoid the bombing, they will be very hard to defeat.

They are going to give IS and other assorted rebel groups one hell of a wake up call. We may have the technological edge and superior overall firepower, but we don't have the political wherewithal anymore to truly let our troops off the leash. The Russians on the other hand are very well known for government sanctioned ruthlessness on the battlefield.

I just spent 6 months in Iraq dealing with ISIL and Al Qaeda. It's essentially a losing battle due to the fact that once we elmintated a provincial governor another was back up the following week and the process was never ending. Only way to kill an idea is extermination and that's something the US wouldn't consider. Perhaps Russia is open to the idea

I spent 15 months of my life during my first deployment (03-05) in Kirkuk, Iraq. All we need to do is back the kurds in this fight. I'm not talking about the PRK (The terrorist group), but the Kurdish regular fighters that we started backing to oust Saddam back in the day (Then suddenly pulled all funding and support from them that lead to them being slaughtered).

They know how to fight and have the aggression and tactical knowledge to get that ****ing job done that we couldn't get done.

I was and would be honored to fight alongside my Kurdish brothers and sisters in Iraq again!

Also, **** sending more of my brothers and sisters to die in that shit hole. We did our damage/good however you see it. Now it's time for some other country to take that ball out of our hands and deal with that shit, which it looks like Russia is doing right now.
