I'm checking out the gas mileage post right, only 5 other people are experiencing my mileage, all with V6's, oversized tires, etc.

so someone please help me out here.

I have a 99 automatic 3rz, 2wd, 155k miles, 265/70/16s, performance headers, K&N drop in filter, the rest is stock pretty much at the moment. I have no spare at the moment, no tow hitch, no rack basket or anything, but I still get 14mpg on average with normal driving.

I only fill up with Shell regular. I have Castrol GTX 10w-30 synthetic...

i use ECT all the time, without it I get 7-10 mpg.

what is wrong? its not running rich, the O2 sensors should be fine.

i think there might be a small exhaust leak between my headers/cat through the gasket... but would that do it?

My catalytic converter might need replacement, its shitty looking and it looks like it could be a culprit.

suggestions! please!

As long as your not throwing any Check Engine Lights your cat is fine. when was the last time you had a fuel system serviced? i would look there i'm getting about 15mpg with ECT off and i have 35" tires with 3 inch lift.

I haven't done anything to my fuel system yet.

What would you consider a servicing?

Damn man, there's really gotta be something wrong with my truck if you're getting that kind of mileage with the lift, v6, tires and stuff...

I would reccomend a can of Techron... it's like ten bucks and it will clean up some of the carbon in your TB and your injectors, etc. It's like $11 but worth it in my opinion. I usually put a can in every oil change.

fuel filter should b under the car bout where the driver seat is and with fuel treatment u just pour it in ur tank when u fill up.. the best 2 that i kno of r lucas or seafoam

I've tried that fuel stuff before, Marvel Magic I believe, and it didn't work, or at least that I could tell.

I agree with trying Seafoam. I've heard very good things. I believe with that you can either put it in your gas or suck it through your brake booster.

its just got additives 2 clean out ur tank and ur fuel system so no huge difference will appear right away.. another good thing is 2 use chevron gas cuz it has techron

where is the fuel filter?

jroyal29 is correct. It is underneath the drivers door, right inside the frame.

It takes a 14mm wrench for the fuel line connectors and a 10mm socket for the clamp that holds it to the body.

I replaced mine not to long ago and it is no big woop.

If I'm not mistake the fuel filter is not under the truck in the same location like with the v6's. Since you have a 4cyl, it's under your hood somewhere. I can't remember exactly where off the top of my head but it's a lot harder to change. Worth the effort or paying someone to do but a pain. I'd also try some fuel system or fuel injector cleaners in your tank. what ever you go with pour it in at about 1/4 or 1/2 tank and go for a long drive on the highway. If your cat is bad you'll smell a rotten egg kinda smell from the exhaust. the exhaust leak will hurt your mileage a little but shouldn't be that bad. I'd get a wrench and see if you can tighten it up a little. Try those things and see where it gets you. If it's still bad I'd look into replacing the o2 sensor. They do go after a while and don't always throw a code. A few other things to that'll help a bit would be switching your diffs to synthetic gear lube. 5w30 oil would also be better for you mileage aswell. keep us posted.

The only excuse for this large of a loss in mileage is a fuel leak somewhere. You need to have your entire system checked out by a professional to save yourself some time. I would also do a full, thorough tune up, all fluids, filters, plugs, wires, and see where that leaves you.

The fuel filter is on the side of the block and is a PIA to swap out, but its doable. Remove the tire and go through the wheel well, IIRC its on the drivers side, but its been almost 5 years since I had my 3rz so it may be the other side. Toyota calls it a lifetime part but I would do it anyway. I would definitely fix that exhaust leak as these can cause hosts of other issues. As was stated something is up with your rig, I had an 00 Runner w/ the 2.7 and 5 speed w/ 4.56 gears and the same tires and never got less then 17 in the winter and always over 20 in the summer, best ever was all highway 24 mpg.

Check your voltage on the throttle position sensor since that part can go bad and not throw a CEL everytime.

so today I ripped the truck apart and I found my culprit.

the tps in my car is new, but in fact it was my catalytic converter. I couldn't even shine a mag lite through it.

ordering a new magnaflow cat 2.5 inch, muffler and all that so I can finally get my exhaust finished.


thanks a ton everyone. I'm gonna do seafoam next oil change and diff oil too. I'll report back when I get mileage test results.
