Issues with Volant CAI on road trip

I installed a new Volant CAI on my 2003 Limited V8 last week. I just came back from a two night road trip to Indianapolis. My truck was fine on the way down. As we started our return trip, the check engine light came on, along with both the VSC light and the VSC Off light. The truck ran great all the way home. I'm thinking it has to have something to do with the CAI. I have never had a warning light come on before. My mechanic installed it and said he had to "modify" the MAF.

I have also had four backfire noises since installing the CAI. I love the extra HP and the sound of the CAI, but if it messes with the MAF it's coming off.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I had a few problems with a K&N intake on my 5.3 Chevy Tahoe. Initially it worked great (20,000 miles) but then started throwing MAF codes. Despite the fact that I was very stingy with the oil it appeared that oil was getting on the MAF sensor. However, even after cleaning everything several times, including the sensor, it was still throwing codes. It would run great untill it threw a code then the computer would run rich and gas mileage would go to hell. Perhaps you are experiencing the same thing and that's why it's backfiring.

I ran it dry for a bit (20,000 miles) and it still threw MAF codes. My mechanic and all the wise men on Z71Tahoe-Suberban.com think the cold air intakes disrupt the airflow and/or cause excess turbulence as the air crosses the sensor. I tend to agree. Once removed my Tahoe stopped throwing the codes. I've since put 125,000 more miles on it with no MAF problems.

Sounds more like a faulty gas cap or plugged CAT. Do a search and you will see. There are tons of posts out there.

It shouldn't have anything to do with your Volant CAI, unless the installer boned something up.

Not to jack the thread but I will be posting some once it gets nicer out in my neck of the woods. I put my Magnaflow on this past weekend, so I was going to take some video. However, yesterday morning the snow had finally all melted in my yard. Today, we have probably 8-10" it got so nasty last night that it was thundering and lightning for about 2 hours while it was snowing.

So much for the first thunderstorm of SPRING!!

Not sure on the 2UZ but on the 1GR the problem with the volant on tacomas is that the diameter of the tube where the MAF sits is to narrow hence MAF errors and have poor afr's. However the next step is up to you whether you keep the volant on and tune it to compensate or install the factory intake.
