It Happened. Need Advice.

Hello all, well it happened to me I got into an accident driving to work.

It was my fault. I didn't see the other driver as I was turning and cut into his lane. We did a face to face. His car is totaled. Mine has 6.3K $ in original Toyota parts and 33 hours of work to be done to it. I will pick it up the 14th October. That's what the person in charge told me.



I have some picks but my post is to ask for advice for when I pick up the truck from the dealer. What do I have to look for and ask them if I am not satisfied with the repairs. I do not want to leave the dealership until I am sure everything has been correctly repaired.

All the front is bent inward , the pictures are not that great also. Anyways I will ask them a copy of all the parts and ask them to show me what was replaced.

The push bar is all bent I am afraid the front frame might be damaged : /

As a former body shop owner (late 70's) that does not look that bad. It does not take much damage to add up to 6k anymore. Make sure oem parts are used, make sure all the body seams line up nice, just take your time and give it a good lookover. Put in in different light conditions and make sure the paint matches. Metallic paints and especially silver colors can be hard to match. Give it a good test drive. If you find a problem soon after picking it up it should still be picked up by the insurance company. Try to tell yourself it is just a vehicle and try not to loose sleep over it. Life goes on and accidents happen.

I would probably have them remove that damage multiplier for you at the dealership... but yeah, make sure factory parts were put back on. Just because the insurance wants to cheap out, doesn't mean that your vehicle deserves any less than to be returned to the state it was before the accident.

do you have a decent pic of your 4runner with that brush guard (pre-accident)? I can't find many pics of a 5th gen with one installed.

With Toyota Canada if you have body work done at a dealership there's a pretty good warranty on the work. Other than doing a good walk around looking for overspray, incorrect paint blending, and that sort of thing make sure that all the doors open and close ok including the hood and the rear hatch. Sine it's front end, take a look at what you can from behind the grille with the hood open. Make sure the lights and signals all work correctly. Turn on the heat and the AC to make sure they work fine. Maybe bring a good camera and take pictures of the areas where work was done.

From personal experience, usually you're so anxious to get the vehicle back and get rid of the lame rental or loaner that you miss things when you're picking it up. Get home and do another once over in good sunlight and take your time about it.

I look over every car that is repaired at a shop I am based out of. Check your gaps. Make sure they are uniform. Make sure your doors open and close. Make sure there is no over spray. Look to make sure they painted things like the bumper off the car. Read over the estimate make sure the right parts were used or replaced. I have seen cars where the bumper reinforcement was to be replaced and the shop just slapped the new bumper over top. Paint is another thing to look at. No matter what the bumpers are going to be a different color than the body it's like that from the factory. Bumpers are usually darker. Just make sure the color difference isn't more noticeable than the rear. There will most likely be some dust in the paint if there is ask the shop to buff it out. Drive the car home the way you drive it everyday bc most people have a tendency to turn the radio off and windows up to listen for every little noise then complain about them not knowing they had been there for awhile. Ask the shop about their warranty and check the car at home away from the shop and excitement of getting it back.
