I've got frame rot!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all

I was looking the 4R over the other day wondering why I have an annoying clicking sound coming from the left front, when I found a rot spot. It's right in front of the driver's side lower control arm bracket. The rest of the frame is good.

I called my mechanic, who said to call the local dealership he once worked for. I spoke to the service manager and I now have an appointment this Wednesday to have them look at it and see if Toyota will stand behind their product. I will keep you all posted.

are they having a look at it for free?
it's a 12 year old truck from maine, i imagine you would have some frame rot being from that part of the country and the age of the truck, got pics?

i hope they sort you out, that would be very very cool, i just can't see it happening though with all things considered.
but hey good luck and post some pics of the damage!

I dont see why toyota will stand behind it, how the vehicle was kept for the last 12 years will cause the rate of rot. I do not like how cheaply toyota rustproofed these but i mean its lasted 14 years...
 
I don't know if I can post pics, my computer is old.

However, I will say, I have seen worse frames. I can brag that mine is still 95% black. The spot is small. It measures only 2" in length. This was a Massachusetts truck. I drive down there a lot for work and I know they put down some nasty s--t on the roads in the winter. I will be using a garden sprayer to oil the inside of the frame.

I will try to post some pics.

They stood behind the same vintage Tacoma's, they bought my Tacoma back for 1.5 times the KBB value. I got a check for $8700 for my 97 4 cylinder 4x4 with 254k on the clock.

Actually i just talked to a guy who used to sell taco's he said bring it in and really complain about it, get the rep on the phone, maybe they'll fix your frame rot or replace it if you push them hard enough.

That's basically what my mechanic said. He has seen Toyota stand behind repairs that are out of warranty. Besides the spot I found, the frame is in great shape for its age and where it's driven.
 
Just curious, is there any minimum amount of time you need to own it for Toyota to warranty it? I've seen a few 4Runners and Taco's for sale and when looking at them found frame rot. Wondering it they'd be worth buying and then trying to fight Toyota.

With the Tacoma's you had to be the owner at the time they announced the recall.

Not a sure thing, not a good bet. Highly dependent on the dealership staff and local rep. I heard of a tacoma frame swap being done very recently, so it's not like the program is over.
 
I have a great hook up with Toyota here locally but I figure there has to be more to it. If I come across another one cheap enough I'd consider it. I too was just told about a frame swap on a Taco, just got me thinking.
 
I've worked for Toyota for the last 10 years and have not seen a 4runner bought back, at least that I know of. I have seen a handful with rust issues, but the taco's were a legit problem.
 
I went into the dealer on Wednesday and they looked at it and took pictures. I got a call Wednesday afternoon from the the service mgr. asking me to come in Friday to let the rep look at it. Let you al know what comes of it.

cool, well that's some progress at least, i'm really interested in what happens, here, and get some pics up already, you got a phone with a camera? you can do it like that as well, take the pic and email it your computer, to do that when it asks you the phone number to txt it to just enter an email addy and that should work.....:frog:
 
Ya good luck with that bro. Ive worked at several dealerships and typically once the vehicle is that far out of warranty youre SOL, but hey more power to ya if it works out! I hope it does
