Jack panel fire extinguisher

Disclaimer: My general handiness skills need serious help.

You could say I could have done more homework for my first mod (if you can call it one), and you'd be right, but I'm only 50% disappointed so it could be much worse...

I thought it'd be rad to attach a fire extinguisher somewhere in the back. I saw that [MENTION=51030]joneseyyy[/MENTION] used some Quick Fist clamps, which achieved the look I was going for, so I ordered them. I attached them both to the jack panel, grinned at my work, clamped in the fire extinguisher, and then watched the panel slowly open because the extinguisher was too heavy for the small plastic tabs on the panel.

While it will generally stay in place, I definitely need some help figuring out how to somehow reinforce the tabs or add something like a basic latch that would keep the panel secure.

Ha! I have the same axe in the same place.

My extinguisher is mounted on the right side, on top of the wheel well, with a single quickfist clamp, like the ones you are using.

Empty out the fire extinguisher before clamping it on to the door, it might save you some weight and prevent the door sag

Maybe you should just move it over to somewhere more secure like Jeremy said? Not sure how well a latch would hold on thin plastic like that...if you still want to keep it there, the best idea I can think of is perhaps seeing if you can fit on a hinge to the door to help hold up some of the weight?

Nice! Separate note, that Fiskars axe is crazy sharp. I'm guessing you don't have the third row? Unfortunately the space above the rear wheel wells in mine is filled with third row armrests that come right up to the windows.

In your case, I'm not sure if you can do a lot without adding more holes in the door and the surrounding plastic.

I would put some modeling clay or something similar "inside" the "v" of the tabs. This should effectively push the tabs outward for more grab. Start with a little bit and see what kind of effect that gives you. If you want more resistance then just add a little more. You basically need something to "push" the tabs outward so that it holds in the locking position.

And if it doesn't work, you can just remove all of the clay.

Haha, thanks Eddie. Yeah, unfortunately there's not really much space elsewhere that I could find back there since the third row armrests come to the window. And it really looks like a great spot otherwise, so I'm hoping I can keep it there. Some sort of small hinge should do the trick just fine, since it's really not pulling it like crazy or super heavy. I just don't really know what websites might carry something like that. Any suggestions? I could always just go browse my local Home Depot first but wasn't sure if you guys might know of some good sites that sell random stuff like this.

You can probably find it at your local hardware store, but if you are a bit more patience I think you'd more than likely find something suitable here: McMaster-Carr

Be warned, that place is addicting, I some how magically spent 50 bucks to mount a 100 dollar roof basket a few months ago there :tape:

Thanks for the link, hatch heaven on there! Was leaning toward Duc's simple suggestion until the comment about it becoming a projectile in an accident, probably a valid concern even with slightly better tabs.

If you are dead set on that spot, here's what I would do.

With the cover in place over the opening, drill a hole between the clips on the leading edge. Drill through both the cover, and the panel behind it. Remove the cover and place a nutsert in the hole left in the panel (still attached to the truck).

Pop the cover back in place and screw a thumbwheel through the hole in the cover and into the nutsert to secure it.

nutserts are pretty easy to install, they go in pretty much like a pop rivet, just pick up a kit at harbor freight for like 10-20 bucks and it should have the setting gun and plenty of inserts for this project

I added a long strip of Velcro to door and panel - door holds tight with no issues.
