One more thing, the head unit is going in behind the iPad. We were going to try and fit it in the glove box, or lower in the center console somewhere but everywhere is too shallow to fit a standard depth single-din. Because of this, a custom bracket was built behind the iPad mount and the mount was modified to allow the head unit to be seen when the iPad is removed, and hidden when it is in place.

this makes me want to uninstall my pioneer in dash unit and never look back!

The whole entire car is getting sound deadened to cut down on road noise and to improve the acoustics.

I don't believe so...I did tell them to use as much sound deadener as possible, but I doubt they will pull the headliner to deaden that. I would imagine it would be a good idea though to cut down on some wind noise from the rack.
Good point! I haven't entirely made up my mind with how/if I'm going to set up my rear storage though so I'll probably save that one for later.

Is it just me or is it off center? Slightly to the left. About 1/4 to 1/2 an inch.
Just checked on this, and everything is centered on the screen itself, not the iPad mount of iPad body. The iPad mini doesn't have a perfectly symmetrical body in landscape so the case is moved over slightly to center the screen.
Oh, ok. Make sense.
This is gonna be a killer set-up. And the guy putting everything together really knows his stuff.
Stoked to see it all come together.

Amazing build. I just couldn't stop reading your thread once I found it. Excellent job with all the switches. I love how you made everything look factory. As soon as I get my 4runner, I'll be coming back to this page for reference. You have some really great ideas and write ups. Thank you. I especially like how the winch looks like it was installed from the factory. Super clean rig. Keep up the great work!

As for the reasoning behind the iPad, the stock Nav leaves a LOT to be desired (such as the iPod control and navigation). The iPad adds a lot of functionality such as expandability, great media control, great navigation, internet connection, and a lot more. Ever since the mini came out I've been looking into building it into the dash, but only wanted to do it if I could still keep the factory features (or improve them) that were the most important to me. I finally got the right configuration to make it all work:
The features that were most important to me that would be lost with the iPad are steering wheel controls, backup camera, and CD player. But this setup allows you to still keep all of those.
Using a single din head unit hidden behind the iPad allows me to keep my steering wheel controls and the CD player. A bluetooth OBDII adapter allows me to keep the real time gas mileage graphs (and also get tons more info using dash command). and finally adding a second screen into the dash and the 360 camera system allows me to keep a reverse triggered backup camera.

Updated the first post of my build thread with a (very thorough) linked table of contents (FINALLY).
Also the pickup date for my truck has been pushed back to Tuesday/Wednesday. The cold stretch we have been having has been slowing the project down as there is a lot of fiberglassing going on.

Haha oh I'm sure you'll beat me! I'm picking up Wednesday at the earliest, and then I'm calibrating the whole system myself so I probably won't be finished until the weekend.

We are trying on the stock head unit. I have the entune system and we are using the nav-tv adapter. If that doesn't work we will have to go to a pioneer or kenwood headunit.

Interesting, as long as you can get the stock Nav to accept a component video input you should be good to go.
