JBL Sub-Woofer Replacement Suggestions

There's a few threads out there if you search subwoofer within this forum. I think I recall people installing Pioneer. You could also go to Crutchfield and punch in your car info. These seem to fit mine, may be the same for yours.

I went with the Kenwood XR but honestly if I had to do it again I would have gone with the cheap amazon sub instead, you're really not going to get much out of an 8" in that enclosure.
I also used the lazy hot knife cut instead of removing the whole side panel and its been holding up fine for last 4 years, you cant even tell it was cut out.

"Hot knife method"? Interesting. I pulled the side panel which should have been easy except for the knob plastic connector. Stock sub is dual coil. Both VC's measured about 7.3 Ohm which I think is good. Surrounds were gone but the driver should have moved with signal. I replaced both head unit and amp with same result. Hmmm.
Very easy/lazy method, just take a knife, heat it up, cut out the surround. I used a folding husky box cutter knife with a fresh blade.
With a clean cut the mesh surround just pops right back in. A few forum threads detail the process.
Downside is you lose protection for the sub from objects being thrown around in the cargo area but I keep a ton of crap back there and never had an issue. Also easy access in case sub goes out again in the future.

Oooh. I just looked at photos. It's 2 Ohm rated so a tough load for amplifier. Can our stock amp handle this? And what about mounting? I see four mounting holes in the sub photo while our sub box has six.
The sub-panel that covers the sub is in theory removable but it has a hot weld in the back to hold it in place. (This sub-panel does not have a grill opening for non-JBL optioned trucks.) If this panel can be made to open on demand, that would give plenty of access to the sub cover. It would look totally stock and not compromise protection.
Thanks for the replies. I ordered Pioneer TS-A2000LD2 from Amazon, $65 shipped, includes $60 coupon for signing up for Amazon Shop card. This sub has 6 screw mount so easy install. I cut out the plastic welds for the sub cover. Cover pops back into place and is friction held but the mounting posts. Not ideal but it stays in place.

I bought a Pioneer TS-2000LD2. I understand why it's a popular sub but it just doesn't do the job for me. I'll replace that one a little while down the line
What did you not like? Did it sound like the stock woofer, which I have never heard. I'm not looking for a competition sub. I just want the rear channel to sound normal-ish, whatever that is.

I never heard my stock sub because it was blown when I bought the car. Don't get me wrong, it's a good sub, but it is not what I was specifically looking for (because i'm an audiophile lol). I listen to rap music, and this sub doesn't play the low bass very good. Everything else it's perfectly fine.
I don't think any rap fan rocks an 8 inch sub. I went to a stereo installation shop to see if they had something off the shelf and they laughed at me. Anyways, based on your other words, I think the Pio will be fine.

Yep, that's my next move lol. I thought that's all I needed to do because my other car (2009 mercury mariner) has the single greatest factory sound system of all time. Haven't been in/driven a car with a better factory sub

What are you hoping for with the replacement? Are you going to replace the factory amp too?
When my sub blew, I decided to redo the entire system. I went with a Fosgate
T1 10inch. Running off of a Fosgate T1000x5. Made my own enclosure for it and I cannot believe how much better this sounds. I was totally impressed that it performs the way it does.
Been in there 2 years now, working great.

Your custom interior panel looks OEM. Very nice. Wasn't hoping for much as the JBL sounds like *ss IMO. With fader set to zero, the back is not keeping up. Sub output is OK but is too laid back like the rest of the rear channel. Now I know why the old hands like the non-JBL system so much better. There are lots of cool plug and play mods like the Yaris screen with SATNAV which I want. Guess that will wait for when I get a gen 5.
