JBL Synthesis

Hey guys,

Just got my 2008 with the ten-speaker JBL Synthesis a few weeks ago and I'm not thrilled with the sound. I've browsed/searched this forum quite a bit over the last few weeks, but I'd like to clear some things up before I stop by an Outlet sale that Crutchfield is having tomorrow.

I have read in a few places that the ten-speaker Synthesis system can be difficult to work with. I'm not sure if that applies to my situation, but I'd like to do the following (and in this order, if not all at once):

-Replace the head unit with a navigation receiver. I have a Garmin and I really like it so I think I will be looking at the Kenwoods. (I'll get rid of my unit, I want the cleaner in-dash look). I also want USB iPod control, since I think a lot of the problem is that I'm using my iPod with the aux input under the armrest.

-Replace the front speakers. Has anyone just replaced the door speakers? Can I just disable the center/dashboard speaker?

-Amp/sub

Any recommendations on equipment or overall method, considering that it's this Synthesis system, would be appreciated! Thanks!

everyone here will tell you, "yeah, go ahead and rip everything out yourself, it's not hard"......and depending on how handy you are....this is correct. I've had experience with Crutchfield and they are absolutely great! If you are half way handy, they will help you out. With your purchase, of course, they will ask you for your make, model, year, etc. and will provide you with instructions. Installing stuff yourself is very rewarding ! Good Luck

If you replace your HU, you can bypass your JBL amp and rerun wires for all your new equipment. If you want to continue using all 10 speakers, that may be an expensive request. I say you just buy a new HU, 4 or 5 channel amp, replace your door speakers with component 6.5" keep your rear door speakers for fill and stop using your center and rear-rears by the hatch. Now if you think your imaging will be too low, buy speakers like focals, morels...etc. with larger tweeters and attenuate them more so as to raise the stage.
