JBL system replacement ADVICE

OK, so obviously I am new here as far as posting goes, but I have been reading this forum for the past 6 or 7 months. I have "inherited" my wifes 4R SE, due to her acquisition of a new GMC Acadia and thus, I am currently in the process of "defeminizing" it, starting with all new interior and stereo. The problem that I am running into is confusion regarding the JBL (RDS) system wiring. I am removing the entire system and replacing with a Sony XNV-770BT double din dvd, blah blah.... but after HOURS of searching this forum (and it's 4:00AM), I am totally confused about the wiring harness or harness's required to complete this task!

After WAISTING my money on this harness:

I now know that it is NOT compatible. I read a thread that stated I would need a Metra TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness, but I think that is only if I am utilizing the factory JBL amp. I am utilizing all new amps and speakers and thus, do not need that. The thought of spending an entire day, laid out in the 4R making wiring harnesses from scratch is about as fun a prospect as a full on body cavity search. Any advice or suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

when I changed out my setup to adding a new amp I just took all the signal wires coming from the stock head unit going to the factory amp and spliced them into the wires coming out of the factory amp to the speakers. The new head unit had a big enough built in amp to push the doors speakers.

Ran a signal wire to the amp from the head unit power supply to the amp mounted the amp under the front passenger seat then ran the speaker wire to the sub in the cargo area.

Get the wiring harness connector for your radio setup for an 08 and for your particular JBL wiring system. connect up the head unit and enjoy your tunes. to utilize the steering wheel controls again you'll have to purchase an additional interface that plugs into the back of your unit and carries the signals from your steering wheel to your new head unit setup. hope this helps..

My 2003 had the 10 speaker JBL system in it. At first I only replaced the head unit. I bought it from Crutchfield and they gave me the harness to adapt the HU to the factory harness and the device to keep the steering wheel controls.

A few months later I replaced everything else. I gutted the interior and ran new wires for everything. I left the existing factory wiring intact.

The factory stereo wiring harness and connectors are still in my 4Runner but every component was replaced and all new wiring used. This way I knew that I would have it connected correctly.

I am very happy with the outcome. It does not shake windows on the car in the next lane but the sound is clear, clean and as loud as I can tolerate it.

Crutchfield prices are a little higher but their service is worth it. If you dont have a lot of knowledge with these factory systems they are a valuable resource.

Good luck wiht the build. Dont be afraid with taking out the interior panels, Toyota does a good job using clips making the process easier.

If I am reading this correctly, you're doing the same thing I did which is to completely remove anything factory from the audio equation, with the exception of power/grnd/dim/etc. wires to your radio?

I installed a JL J2 320.4 on my 4 door speakers and 250.1 on my sub. I used the tyto wiring harness and just connected the RCAs to my JL amps instead of the little converter box. I may have left the converter box out entirely.

With all the connections in there I didn't want to rewire all the stuff from the factory harness, so I just plugged in the tyto (which I got very cheap on eBay or Amazon, and it may have been the scosche version) and then only used the necessary wires to power my DNX-9960.

I believe I have a detailed writeup somewhere here on t4r that I posted for another member that bought a previous unit from me. I'll try to find it and repost it here.

edit - sorry it must've been a doc file or pdf or something, as it's not in my previous thread history.

double edit - I ran all new speaker wires to the doors so I would have higher quality connections, if you're planning to try and utilize the factory speaker wiring that will muck things up a bit and you'll have to find those wires to tap into.

I wanted to avoid trying to shove wires through the rubber door bendy tube things. However, since you mentioned it, I went out there and looked at the wire bundles going into the doors and realized that I can simply splice into the speaker wires right there at the door jams. Does anyone know which harness is for the steering wheel controls?

This is the module to utilize the steering wheel controls, I'm pretty sure they're universal you just have to program it to your truck.

I By passed my factory amp right at the amp connector I used a signal indicator to tell me what speaker wires were which and spliced the incoming signal wires to the corresponding out going speaker wires. The Kennwood HU has a built in amp that pushes plenty of power to the door speakers (I'm still using factory door speakers and tweeters gettings great mids and highs out of all of them) I deleted the front center speaker as it became the loudest speaker in the truck after the install (IMO the sound is much much cleaner) added in a JL250 single channel amp to a JL10w-7 port/slotted box and the sound is amazing.

I'd post pics of the splice job but I've had that back panel off enough lately lol if i have to pull it to run my back up cam video feed soon I'll get a shot of it then. I was even able to leave some of the wires connected to the factory connector and tuck it away incase anyone ever wanted to re-install the factory sub/amp HU setup (who knows why but its there anyway). all in all it was an easy install the biggest pain was determining which factory speaker wires were which while by-passing the factory amp.

I replaced my factory non-JBL system with JL Audio amp, sub, & TR690-TXI/TR650/CXI speakers - I utilized the factory speaker mounts & wiring for the door speakers even though I read you couldn't. Not sure that it was the best way to go but, it came out just fine.

Let me know if you want details - I couldn't find a thread so I just talked with a local stereo shop owner and he walked me through it.

*Edit* I agree, if you buy the right head unit adapter you don't need to worry about the JBL factor - your wiring will be standard. I just did what you're wanting to do on a non-JBL - so I know what you're going through - if you remove ALL of the JBL equipment you're doing a very similar install.

Actually when you count the fact that the wiring harness is FREE...plus the brackets and all mounting hardware is FREE...along with FREE shipping..their prices are very reasonable. When I replaced my head unit about a year ago...I looked locally...and after you add in the harness and bracket...the Crutchfield price was lower.

Use the chat function or just call Crutchfield. They are very helpful, you can describe what you're seeing if you're unsure of what you have and they'll let you know what's compatible. I talked to them about every step of my JBL refresh and they were super helpful. I ended up only buying one item from them (I took the info they gave me and went to Amazon with it).
