JBL wiring help

I installed a Scion FRS radio. Its mostly working. Couple issues though. I have no back lighting on the buttons of the radio. The dimming of the screen works when headlights are turned on. I know I dont have it wired correct. Metra is no help with their tech support. I guess its not right in the install instructions. Can some one tell me What wire is for the back lighting of the buttons on the FRS radio? Ive been messaging back and forth with a couple people on here that had the same issue when doing this same install. I dont want to make them take their dash apart to tell me how I need to hook it up. So im looking for correct wire colors and pins of both the factory JBL and FRS radio so I can figure it out myself. GOOGLE is not much help for correct wiring and pin out diagrams. I can usually find the stuff on my own. But not having any luck. And taking apart the dash every day just to diag and put back together so I drive it is getting old. My Metra TYTO-01 is having a volume issue also. So I have to take that back out and send in and wait for another. All this just to have a decent radio...

I found this on Crutchfield. And Looks like the FRS unit uses PIN 10 in the 10 pin connector (Violet color+) and PIN 5 in the 6 pin connector (black/white -) for illumination. So now I gotta figure out how to feed it the power and ground properly. It is not as easy as color matching unfortunately. Ill keep updating this as I get it done. Gotta wait on my new TYTO-01 to come in. Issues with that also...

I ran into the same problem when I did the install over the summer, you need to connect pins 2 (ILL+) and 12(ILL-) from the R12 connector (20 pin harness on the vehicle side) to their corresponding pins on the 10P+6P (ILL+ and ILL-) on the head unit side. See the pics below for reference.

Also, you can use a multi-meter to verify by probing pins 2 and 12 on the vehicle harness. With the headlights on you it should read +12-13v and with the headlights off it should read 0v.

Did you ever figure out your volume issue?

I tried to install my FRS HU with my JBL system today. I had the exact same back light issue; guess we have the same instructions. I figured out that I just needed to ground the illumination wire so I spliced it with another ground.

The issue I can't resolve is the volume. All the speakers seem to be working, but the left front speaker drowns out the rest of the vehicle. If I try to balance with the new HU, it goes down, but still not enough compared to the rest of the speakers. I tried everything. I put my old unit in at least 10 different times as I tinkered with things. Each time I would put all the settings to 0, turn the volume up 3/4 loud, and turn off. I eventually called Metra and they told me to replace the Metra TYTO. So now I have to wait for the new one.

Did your replacement solve your problems?

I did get my illumination working correctly. I received a 2nd TYTO-01 to fix the volume/gain issue. The 2nd one is better. By still not right. I called metra back and they are saying my install not being done by a "professional" shop is causing the issue. lol. So maybe I'll get a 3rd TYTO and hope it helps. Waiting to hear back from metra again. See what happens.

[MENTION=113957]MrRoo[/MENTION] Well... I thought my backlighting was good, but I noticed my instrument lighting goes out when I turn on my lights. Dimmer works on all other interior lighting and the hu lights up fine. How did you ultimately get yours to work?

I tried rewiring per the earlier post (2 & 12 pins on factory harness) but that didn't fix it and actually made the hu backlighting not work.

I think I may have blown out my rheostat (dimmer) when i initially installed. I don't want to blow out a new one since they are kind of expensive. I want to make sure this is the solution that worked.

Yes. That's what worked for me. I haven't had a chance to take it apart again to get good pics. Been busy buying another house. I'll get to it in a few weeks and mess with the TYTO again. Metra wants to diagnose over the phone with me about it.

For me, everything seems to be working. Just put in a new rheostat (dimmer) and confirmed that was the issue. I just finished everything this evening so I don't know for sure if my metra will behave, but so far so good.

Installed usb in console, Bluetooth mic, and rear camera.

Unfortunately the tyot harness is junk but it's the only thing we have.

I've been having huge issues with metra quality control lately.

I have 2003 limited with JBL and RDS. I installed a PAC TATO with a steering wheel interface..
After I plugged the tato into the toyota 20pin and the SWI into the steering wheel control plug, I am left with one harness from the vehicle that I don't have any plugs for, is this by chance a harness for the RDS?

Only issues I'm having are when I'm on a bluetooth device the speakers seem to lose power randomly and the sound will dull out and pick back up. Also, minimal to no audio out of my rear speakers (left mostly). This is what makes me wonder about that extra plug....

Any ideas?

The extra plug probably goes to the rear seat entertainment. In case you don't know (just discovered mine) there are audio controls built into the dome light on some 4Rs. I left the plug hanging in the back of the HU.

For the TYTO-01, I had to send the first one back. The speakers were all unbalanced and I couldn't compensate enough with the sound controls. My second one works great so far.

Lastly, I had sound levels changing constantly because the HD radio was going in and out. I thought maybe I had the power antenna wired wrong but it wasn't. It ended up being the antenna y harness. I plugged the bigger antenna wire in by itself, let the smaller one hang, and it sound great now.

This is with the JBL synthesis, T1819 scion radio and a PAC TATO setup.

Edit: spoke to PAC and they said to use a 4 channel line output converter. This will produce a steady analog signal for the TATO to work properly and they were correct.

Gents, I've got to ask: has anyone installed a radio on a 4th gen Trail Edition or UrbanRunner? They both have that TomTom unit. I'm about halfway through an install and it's a bit odd. None of the major radio manufacturers seem to have accounted for it, but the folks at Crutchfield are working to get a new guide out.

As much as it pains me to say it, and if you haven't tried already, Cartoys usually (not always) has at least one manager that is pretty knowledgeable, and has probably run into this install.

Ive never had luck calling them as some employee tries to charge me for troubleshooting and wants to do the work.
But everytime I go in and ask for a manager face to face and lay it out that I have a few questions, but am doing my own install... I can usually find some good answers

Good call. I might have to head to one. The folks at Crutchfield have been really helpful over the phone, it's just a bit tough when you can't show them the part in person.
