I disagree, this engine is given a bad rep solely because of the carter 2 barrel carb. Throw on a Weber or a Motorcraft and it's a whole new engine. This motor in particular has 192k on the motor, not a tick, ping, or knock in it. Although it does leak a little oil...lol

i have owned 6 jeeps and loved them while i had them, did everything from axle swaps,t-case swaps, to rebuilding some of the torqueflite trans cases, all the while keeping an eye on the 4runner thinking that maybe in a few years i could afford one, now that i got one i wouldn't go back for anything in the world, sure i don't got a solid front axle anymore but everything else on the truck only breaks if i do something stupid to break it no more crappy electrical work to deal with no more chasing down random noises and death wobbles, i'm a happy man owning a 4runner, that said i still have a '91 xj inline 4L sitting @ my house as we speak and like the op said for the money it is a great little truck, i mean i picked it up for 1.4K other cars in that price range are crappy little honda accords and such, so yeah if you don't mind turning the wrench picking up an old xj dropping 1K in mods on it and you can have yourself a pretty cool little trail rig, but never,ever, again will you catch me using one of those as a DD/toy, jeeps to me now are toys only. yes i am moving on up to the eastside baby, i got a 4runner now and am in a differant class all together, lol
