Yes, I've always struggled with this when considering used cars (and to be honest, I've never actually bought one used in my whole life).

You find a good deal on a somewhat newer vehicle and the question that immediately comes to my mind: "Why did the original seller sell it in the first place?"

I personally find the sweet spot to be to buy new and then drive it for 4 to 8 years. Trade out before the residual value craters and maintenance and upkeep becomes significant.

A car payment is predictable. A major driveline failure or some other nagging issue is not.

that's how we develop our mechanical skills...out of necessity!

Not my COVID Honda! (See above post for more details regarding my Ridgeline)

Sorry to read that. I have no experience with newer Hondas. There are very few Ridgelines around these parts. I don't know of a single person who owns one.

I think there is a sweet spot between the early 90s to early 00s where Honda made fantastic vehicles...with the S2000 taking the grand prize. It was Honda's Golden Age.

In fact, a former T4r.org admin just got himself a mint 2005 S2000 with 35k miles on odometer!

When I bought my 2000 SI, it was on one turntable inside the showroom and a yellow S2000 was on the other. I wanted the S2000 but couldn't afford the price tag and my wife would have killed me for buying a roadster.

New cars are a waste of money and a really bad investment and that includes Toyota.

Cars in general are a terrible investment take it from someone like
Warren Buffet the billionaire drives an old pickup and lives below his means.

You don't get rich by making bad financial decisions, only the greedy automakers get rich. You lose.

I'd have to disagree with your statement, especially when it comes to a 4Runner. I'll gladly take the initial depreciation hit buying new, cuz what I'm getting in return is a 20-year, 500K vehicle with basic (driveway) maintenance. Heck, my '05 still runs and drive like new, it's been paying me back for a long time...so lighten up Francis and go buy a new 4Runner while you still can.

Having doubts will ruin any honeymoon....

I have bought ONE USED car. ____.it was used by Acura dealer as a loaner car...so we bought an Acura dealership loaner.

"But buying a used car is like reusing a condom from some other dude"

That is like reusing a condom that is been worn by thousands of other dudes but only for a few days at a time. :lmao:

But this is different...the other dudes stretch it out so that it fits me better....

Well, if you got money, then enjoy it however you like. While I did buy my '05 4Rrunner new (custom ordered), I find it more enjoyable buying a good used vehicle. I enjoy wrenching on things and tinkering with things...up to a point and having a used vehicle with some blemish is so relaxing and stress free. Don't really worrying about going into a crowded parking lot or the stray shopping cart. But's that's me...and I fully understand the potential issues of buying a used vehicle.

I think one of problems these days is people getting into other people's business too much...each to their own.

If you pay for the vehicle, the insurance and fuel...enjoy it...life is short.

Now, having said all that...I'm going to digress...the issue I have is when what you decide to spend or buy affects me in some way...either directly or indirectly. AKA...student loan forgiveness. I mean that money has to come from somewhere. I had student loans (less than 10k) and for about the first year, I lived in an apartment with a mattress on the floor for a bed, a small TV and a small table with two chairs (that my mom gave me) until those loans were paid off. I just don't understand.

Each to their own, but I just don't understand this concept of living in perpetual debt...but hey, if you got the money, enjoy life and don't care what other's think.

The prices are FINALLY starting to tempt me. I don't really like small trucks but I could get a Rubicon Gladiator and if I found one with the XR package, I'd not have to do much to it since it would come with a re-gear to 4.56 and 35s...and all under warranty. We have a LOT of Gladiators on lots here and while I see a lot of them driving around, the current supply is still significant. If I could not find a XR, I'd be tempted to build it to 37s with 4.88 gearing. My wife hates the look of it but it would be hard to beat the off-roading capability with anything but the Wrangler Rubicon and the bed could be useful for my home improvement projects too. Plus, she would not be driving it anyway...just criticizing the looks every now and then till she tires of that.

Ive been looking at the gladiator mojave and rubicons, rubicons are starting at 45k , very tempting.

It really is. I have been looking online but not going to the dealerships yet since that is just practically committing! I have been trying to also piece together a Synergy lift with 35s and 37s to see what that would add to the cost.
