Jeep went diesel, Toyota next?!

I have to say, this new Grand Cherokee is beautiful inside and out, yes I said it!

Not saying I would buy one, only because of reliability but goodness, they have really upgraded it. Maybe Toyota will be pressed to follow suite?

Reliability and jeep are two words that don't go together like they used to, shame really. I guess diesels are good for pulling, but otherwise I don't see the point. As we all remember back in the day the fuel was cheaper, but not any more. Diesels are noisy and smelly. If Toyota starts using them over here I'd take a pass on getting one.

I agree!! they look pretty sweet and have a decent powerplant but would never buy one do to the fact I wanted something to last 100k miles without much mechanical up keep other then common maint. Neat pic though, but I don't see Toyota releasing the diesel here since they've had one in the Pardo and Hilux for decades. That topic has been beaten to death so I won't go into it more then that...

Nice looking vehicle, but I see two issues right off the bat. First, they need to modify the headlight surround. It looks like a piece of the headlamp is missing. Second, I want to see the TE version! Its already screaming for plastidip.

False, and it has been for nearly 10 years now. Modern diesels are quiet and smooth. I prefer the smell of a diesel engine over a gas engine.

Diesels aren't just for towing - I've had an '04 and then an '06 Cummins Dodge that I had hopped up mildly, and they were awesome daily drivers. I'd take a modern diesel over a gas engine any day - torque is amazing and they're starting to make horsepower numbers to match....just look at the specs on the most recent models of HD pickups offered by the big three. And fuel economy is phenomenal too, especially with a DPF delete kit.

If Big T put a Diesel in the T4R, I would buy one that day. I've driven Landcruisers, Prados, HiLuxs, RAV4s, Fortuners, and Vans with Diesels all over the world (but here in the US) and always had great power and fuel economy. These powerplants pay for themselves over the long run.

I would drive a diesel 4Runner tomorrow if it was available. The cost of the fuel may be similar but the range on a diesel is huge.

Haha. exactly what I was thinking. It looks like they just plugged new headlights into the opening shaped for the old ones.

To each their own then. I've been at many a light when it turned green and the diesel next to me takes off spewing noxious smelling fumes right at ya. I generally put the window up beforehand. We can agree to disagree on that odor.

I've driven lots, none were mine. I'd heard the VW was fairly quiet until I was next to one at a stoplight. Noisy and smoky. Maybe it just needed a checkup.

I'd love to have the V8 Diesel out of the export only LC's in our 150. It makes perfect sense. I loved those trucks when I drove them while abroad.

I would have bought the GJC had it had a rear roll down window. That was the only deal breaker for me. You all need to remember that the GJC pictured was engineered under Mercedes leadership, not Chrysler.....hence why it's won damn near every 4x4 award the last 2 years.

Don't get me wrong, I love my T4R but don't knock that GJC until you drive one. Amazing SUV!

Smoky? Really? wonder how it passes smog being that it wouldn't pass visual inspection and all :wow2:

Modern Diesels have come a long long way from what they were 10 years ago, that being said; this really applies more to the car segment than the truck segment as there are 2 things going against American Diesels. One is our horrible fuel, the reason we don't have as many of the smooth, powerful diesels we see in Europe is because our diesel is utter crap compared to most of the world. The second issue is that American truck Diesels are better but many people chip, poorly tune, and "trick" out their trucks so they're noxious, smoking, noisy, flaming piles of junk.

If you're ever in Europe I guarantee you will guess 4/5 cars wrongly as being gasoline.

Toyota makes a couple good diesel motors, they've been greatly accepted by almost every market but the US. Again this is mostly due to the poor fuel quality (in fact the removal of Sulfur from our diesel is something the rest of the world did almost a decade ago and it will greatly increase wear and problems on older diesels not using fuel additives every fill up.) and lack of demand on the consumer's part.

That being said, I have seen many a VW that run nice and quiet with a Diesel and I've seen MANY VW sounding, smoking, and over all looking like the engine was going to just go at any minute... those are called 1.8L Turbo Gasoline Engines... one of the worst engines made by VW, damn things spit turbo seals and self drown themselves in oil after about 100k...

My neighbor has a Land Cruiser FJ67z with a Toyota Diesel in it, and man that thing is quiet for a diesel. Much more so that you regular Ford F350. Plus a diesel makes it so much more cool. Too bad he has to keep it registered in Montana because of the emissions. It was a standard petrol, but it was retrofitted by TLC a while back. One of the cleanest FJ60 series that I have ever seen.

I keep hearing that, but I have yet to see an idling diesel that doesn't stink.
