Jeep went diesel, Toyota next?!

I keep hearing that, but I have yet to see an idling diesel that doesn't stink.

Come on by the house. I will take you for a ride in my Passat diesel. Tons of torque, quiet, etc. My boss thought the same thing. Took him to lunch one day and his expression was priceless when we got back and I told him it was a diesel.

BTW, 42 mpg form a full size car is not to shabby either :)

I just came out of a diesel that I drove for 7 years. The motor was great however everything else that would normally go wrong on an American built vehicle went wrong. The maintenance costs did not justify. When I bought it diesel was .50 less per gallon and the 3/4 ton truck got 20-23 mpg hwy and good mpg's while towing. With diesel prices vs regular gas you would have to drive alot of miles to get the payback of the extra $ shelled out for the motor. If you have to pour in the DEF fluid there is more cost. Having owned a diesel truck I'll pass on another one unless I buy a massive RV and need something to tow it with and even then it would have to beat out the Tundra which would be first on my list.

this new jeep is supposed to get 30 mpg on the highway, by the way. That is incredible for a 4wd SUV weighing over 2 tons.

not that anyone here is interested in MPG.

All of you guys realize that this is just a "re-introduction" of the diesel Jeep GC don't you? All the magazines and websites are making this into something new and great when the truth is Jeep GC's were offered with a version of this diesel until 2008.5. They took it off the market in 2009 because that diesel would not meet emission standards. They re-worked it a little and improved emissions and now it's being touted as a groundbreaking achievement. A friend of mine still has his 2008 Jeep GC diesel. It has 66,000 miles and has been in the shop numerous times for all different problems ranging from front auto leveling headlights pointing down at the ground to rear suspension components broken with several glow plug and ignition issues. He rarely drives it now as he got a Volvo XC. He has kept the Jeep to remind him to never buy one again.

Please, do not be fooled by smoke and mirrors and flashy pictures leading you to believe this is a great vehicle. Jeep GC outsells the 4Runner 3:1. What this means to me is there are a lot of gullible people buying SUV's. If you ever owned one of these and had no issues you are part of a small, rare group. The truth.

Agreed that the reliability on the Jeeps sucks and I would never buy one, but I have to agree with the OP that they do look great inside and out.

Have you ever owned one? I have owned and still own numerous Jeeps... the older JGCs are the only Jeep I have ever had an issue with. The Wrangler (especially the 4.0) is indestructible! While I love my 4R Jeep is a very reputable brand and can run circles around the 4R off road (Wrangler) the new JGC are doing pretty damn good now that Mercedes has an influence.... I imagine the Diesel GCJ is going to be a hot item.... people need to stop regurgitating what they read on the interwebz and get so real life experience with things

Whatever

Whatever dude- your personal good experience with the Jeeps that you have owned does not cancel out the plentiful data that exists on the poor reliability of the JGC- for starters check out the True Delta ratings for the Jeep JGC.

exactly as I thought you dont know what you are talking about... for starters talk to real consumers about their experience... visit a jeep forum just as you are for your 4R and stop believing what PAID agencies are feeding you

You drank the kool-aid too :nono: I see. Don't try to justify to anyone what personal experience (listed in my above post) and any hard data site will tell you. Yes, your wrangler is a great off road vehicle but crap on road. Otherwise you would have never gotten a Toyota 4Runner. The Jeep GC is not a Wrangler. It is a poorly made machine with great marketing skills. Just look at the resale value dude. That is the true measure of a vehicle's reliability and durability. Price for a used vehicle is all about the demand for that vehicle and if they are cheap then there is not much demand for a reason.

Here you go - Real data. The repair frequency is per 100 vehicles.

GREAT is open to interpretation... if you want it to be a luxury feel then sure it is poor but it handles and performs as well as my 4runner in daily operations. no one is running a slalom course the older JGC sucked.. the new ones are performing just fine. resale is NOT the sole disposition of a vehicles reliability.... numbers of said vehicle produced affects resale as well which you eluded to with "demand". Bottom line is Jeep is a solid product... I have both Jeep and Toyota and both equally have their issues and high points. No koolaid has been drank here.... those fancy charts dont show what the reason for repair was... I will take failed door panel clips over driveshaft replacement any day. so you can post pretty pictures from paid agencies all day long.... it bears no weight in my eyes....

My FIL owns 2002 liberty, zero problems in 10 years and 155 thousand miles, literally zero.
I'd buy diesel JGC in a heartbeat.

C'mon Stifler, you're a smart guy. You know that DEMAND is the only real driver for price. If there is a low demand then there will be a low price. What could cause a low demand on a supposedly "solid" used vehicle? Reliability and durability. Oh, and perception too. Reality usually drives perception also. The only good thing about a Jeep GC is their ad agency. I will agree the Wrangler is a great off road vehicle. On road? Not so much, and I rode in a 2012 4 door 3 1/2 hours on the interstate late last year. There is not much compromise with them. It does give you a manly image and a shot of self esteem though lol.

You're suggesting there are multiple organizations that exists solely to spread false reliability data on the jeep grand Cherokee? And not only do they do this, but they get paid by Toyota or TRR members? That makes sense..

not just the JGC... yes I 100% believe a lot of these "UNBIASED" reporting agencies like Consumer Reports, Car&Driver etc are nothing more than PAID "clients" They feed information according to who pays the most....

but that is a personal preference.... it performed just fine right? maintained highway speed handled lane changes and did not break down right? Was is quiet and cushy like a Lexus? no.... I have driven this to Utah and back without any issues.... Not a Lexus but it PERFORMED just fine

Here ya go Stifler. One more just for you. I just picked a random sampling of "real" jeep owners. NOT enthusiasts like you would find on a forum. As far as I know this place does not get paid by any manufacturer. I do know a few people don't like them because of emails but I have been part of it since 2005 and I only get an email once every quarter or so. Otherwise, this is real data from real owners. Drinking the kool-aid.
Enjoy.

I actually like the Wrangler. It is a good off road vehicle that performs marginally on the highway. I think the GC is a crap machine with a great marketing team. I have data to back me up. You do not. I win.

like I said you can post those all day long.... I dont drink the kool aid... I didnt vote for Obama.... I refuse to abide by changes to the 2nd amendment.... in other words I base my decision off of personal experiences and not what agencies tell me to believe..... at this point we can agree to disagree

I have a 2011 GMC Duramax diesel that is around 400 HP from factory, no add ons or anything such as boxes or chips. It runs quiet, smooth, and gets decent mileage for what it is and the work that it does. Trust me...if Chevrolet and/or GMC can build a reliable, quiet, effecient, clean diesel motor then Toyota is more than capable.

I have been driving diesel trucks for the past 15 years and they have come a long way over that time. Do you see some that are modified to put out smoke because it looks cool? Sure you do! just like you see some 4runners lowered and sittin' on 22's yo!

I can say that any of you that are claiming diesels are smelly, smoke belching outdated vehicles have very little to no experience with them at least in the past 5-7 years. Times have changed it is time to educate yourselves a bit better. If Toyota comes out with a diesel powered 4runner I will be in line for one. Mostly due to their history that I am familiar with of the early 3B series of diesel motors that came in the Landcruiser. I am sure their current configuration of the 1VD-FTV (261 HP/479LB-FT) Toyota diesel motor would be a welcomed addition to the 4runner when paired with a manual 6 speed transmission. That motor is seeing 22.8-27.4 MPG. If they do not come out with one by the time I wear out the current motor in this 4runner I will swap in a diesel w/6 speed manual (and probably a SAS at that time as well):hail:

Have done that

I actually have visited the JGC forums, primarily because I loved the look of the new JGC . I also test drove it and loved it. Through being on those forums, doing internet research, and also talking to a few friends (my ex-gf who I dated for a year and a half used to own a JGC which had numerous issues during that period, also one of closest friends used to own a JGC, which also had a lot of issues) I have come to the conclusion that JGCs have questionable reliability. And your assumption that you are the only one on here who knows what he is talking about is also something that you should reflect on.
