JGC VS 4Runner. Can we sticky this?

I thought it was funny when he said he did no research and let sales guy "glen" talk him into this pos. lol

whats more disturbing is how all these people on the Jeep forum keep sticking up for Jeep saying it's a new system so its understandable and it's been to the shop 4 times now. Really?

lets be clear.... we are talking JGC... my Jeep CJ, TJs and JK have been flawless. my 06 JGC was gone in 6 months

There was a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited in our family. It was a solid vehicle. The only issues I recall over 200,000km were exhaust manifold cracked, rear pinion seal leaked after towing 1,500km @ 200km on the odo, and I believe the alternator. Other than that, it was a tank and just regular maintenance. I loved that V8 too.

You have to feel bad for some of these people who get these lemons.

My 2010 JK was pretty decent. Wheel bearing went and some leaky issues (both warranty)... aside from that no problems really. 4Runner is WELL worth the extra 10 grand though.

Likewise we had a Grand Cherokee Limited which performed flawlessly. Moreover it's available with a very powerful V-8 that's based on the venerable Hemi design, and an 8 speed AT. Don't we have people here who consistently say there should be a V-8 option, and at least a six speed transmission?

I've always thought if you have something you firmly believe in, that should be able to stand on it's own merits. No doubt if someone searches You Tube, they can find complaints about any vehicle....including 4 Runners. A 4 Runner is a great product, and tearing down something similar doesn't make that any more or less true.

It's kinda funny because I went to YouTube after my previous post and searched things like "4Runner Lemon", "4Runner sucks", "4Runner is crap", "why not to buy a 4Runner" and found nothing lol.

That's actually very surprising, I consistently see issues with the electronics (there's a reason almost every technician has no issue throwing computers at Chry-Corp vehicles and hesitate to replace modules in say a Honda or Toyota and cost is only one factor), interiors, and drivetrain on almost every Grand Cherokee and Durango I see. Not to mention that while the "Hemi" design is nice and makes good power (that particular V8 actually makes a few horses more than the 2UZ-FE, but not by much) they have had various small issues, though I am seeing more issues with the newer Hemis (the 5.7L & 6.2L) more than that older 4.7L. There was a thread someone made about "top 10 cars on the road after 100k miles" and the JCG didn't even make top ten (granted you take that with a grain of salt, but it wasn't entirely inaccurate.)

Basically, they tried to make a Chrysler built ML class and made it even worse than the actual ML class (even using real MB stamped parts in many cases.) They are nice vehicles for the most part when everything works right, but that's the point; they rarely work right. :(

Every vehicle and manufacturer will have issues, but JGCs seem to have more than expected, especially with a brand new vehicle. Every time a thread like this pops up on here I am glad Toyota is boring. Boring gets us a tried and true V-6 and a five speed tranny, no air suspension and no dashboard with more electronics than NORAD but it also gets us great reliability.

I wonder if this is the classic apples to oranges comparison. That is Toyota's penchant for going with the tried and true, vs. Chrysler taking advantage of the association with Mercedes and trying to leapfrog a generation. We can argue whether the leap was successful or wise, but the facts are what they are.

The 4Runner has had the same basic engine and transmission platform since God was in knee pants. While the Jeep provides engine choices, LED lighting, and a ZF 8 speed transmission. Interestingly enough the complaint against Jeep used to be their sticking with the straight 6 / four speed with solid axles, when new technology made that passe.

This reminds me of the divide between Porsche and Ferrari lovers. The 911 has been tweaked and tweaked again for decades. While every few years Ferrari introduces a new generation, based on a philosophy of pushing boundaries to the extreme. The former leads to reliability and confidence, at the potential cost of samo samo. The latter provides excitement and buzz...but at the expense of mistakes on the learning curve.

In the end Jeep / Runner and 911 / Ferrari comparisons lead us to the same conclusion. There's no right or wrong answer, because the question (read design purpose and intended buyer) wasn't the same in the first place. Are you looking primarily at utility, so you'll accept a body on frame six cylinder with a five speed? Or the latest and greatest technology in unibody, so you're willing to live with the potential for problems?

While that's a fairly true statement, Jeep tried to do what the ML class did and did it worse. If they were trying to integrate newer technology that's all fine and good, but Mercedes had better quality control and reliability with their own parts than when Chrysler tried to use MB parts in the JCG, not to mention issues such as dropping valve seats in the 5.7 & 6.2 V8's, their horrible track record for computers/modules, and rather poor interior quality (i.e. Ram Dashboards being made of black saltines) is all Chrysler. I actually liked Jeep's "old school" stuff even if that I6 was pretty much the same one they had in the 1940's! :P

Toyota has stuck with fairly similar technology in their vehicles, but they make incremental changes over time and maintain a decent reliability (newer vehicles seem to be getting decontented and quality is slightly waning from the "old days." The 1GR-FE actually went through small subtle changes within the 4th Generation '03-09 run (sensors were updated, VVTi assemblies don't interchange between what seems to be pre-'05 engines), not to mention that the current 1GR-FE is different than the single VVTi unit installed in the '14 Tacoma that was carried over from the 4th gens, while the 5th gens and FJ Cruisers got an updated 1GR-FE.

I'm all up for trying new stuff and I do wish Toyota would push the envelope a hair without decontenting vehicles; but Chrysler has spent a decade trying to "move forward" and fallen face first consistently. There come a time when as a company you need to stop and go, "we are trying to do too much new technology when we can't handle it or even make it reliable." For most companies that would have been after the first bankruptcy, not after the second one where you get bought out by an Italian company. :)

^^^I agree on Toyota decontenting the vehicles somewhat. But, I think they do that to keep the price reasonable while still giving good reliability. That's a trade off I'm willing to make, as we can see the opposite end of the spectrum with the JGC; awesome content for the price (when it works), but reliability and quality suffer. And before we go a decide that Toyota's reliability has fallen off with the 5th Gens, lets see how they are holding up in another five years or so. By then my TE will be 10 years old almost . (this vehicle is like a kid; I never want it to get older) I bet the reliability numbers will be in line with what we have come to expect from Toyota and 4Runners in general. Hell, many people routinely pine for the 4th Gen and talk up their great reliability. they can't have fallen off a cliff in just one generation.

I suppose I should state that I have owned every generation of Grand Cherokee (98 4.0L, 2000 4.7L, 2002 4.7L HO, 2006 5.7L and 2012 Pentastar 3.6L) I have also owned a 2000, 2008, 2011 and 2013 4Runner.

Every Grand Cherokee I owned needed axles rebuilt under 50K miles. The 98 only the rear but the other ones front and rear. The 06 needed rear rebilt and entire front axle assemble REPLACED at 7500 miles. The 02 Overland needed over $5000 worth of warranty work in one month! The included front and rear diff rebuilds, entire dash ripped out to fix plastic part, rain sense module, heated seats...this was at 40K miles!!! The 2012 was the most solid of them all. Then again, it only had 20K miles when I dumped it. It has misaligned door panels on all 4 doors, a whine at 45mph on decel but it seemed much more solid. The 2014 JGC is a total pile of sh!t. Has a new 8 speed clunkomatic trans and new computer system that renders the entire vehicle useless.

My 4Runners are bland, boring, lacking features...but everything works. The 2000 had 110K miles when I got rid of it and everything worked like new and all materials, paint, etc showed ZERO sign of wear.

My 2 cents. :)

Funny you mention that. My rear passenger side door seems are ever so slightly off/bent. You can see it on the wheel well moulding as the piece connected to the door sticks out just a mm or 2 more than the moulding over the wheel well. I'll be getting the dealership to look at it during routine maintenance next week. It is easily noticeable once you spot it.
