I worked in a dealership service department (Chrysler, not Toyota) for 3 summers while in school..... that experience has led me to do all the maintenance myself

Yup. I had them tell me on my previous Gen 3 (6 months old) 4 Runner that the radiator fluid had rust in it because it was red (Toyotas fluid color redish/orange) and it should be green like other cars, therefore needing a $200 flush. I said just change the oil while I watched, left, and have never been back.
What a bunch of tools. I think wallet flush is the right term for their services.

They exist because there are still people who go there and throw their money down the tubes. If people stopped patronizing places like this, they'd fold eventually.
Unfortunately, for many people, convenience comes first - even at the expense of proper auto care.
Jiffy Lube is crap. But we all knew that. I get my oil changes done by my local guy who does only oil changes, 7 dollars for labor, they do a great job and have been doing so for the last 10 or so years. It's crazy how quality service can take you from a small covered shed to a larger tilt-up.
And just FYI, I do that because I don't have the patience to change my oil, nor the desire to spend time cleaning up afterwards and recycling the oil. I am willing to pay 7 bucks for 10 minutes of work.

Yeah I've taken my truck in to get the oil change done. No regrets. I normally do it myself, but when it's in the middle of winter and I don't have a garage, I ain't doing it. I avoid those in/out places though, I go to a shop my family has been going for years. They do quality work and don't try to overcharge me for stuff.
I remember the incident that sealed the deal. I had problems with my AC in my 93 Celica. It just wouldn't cool down at all. I finally broke down and brought it in. I asked them to look into it to see if there was a leak or something. He called me into the bay 10 minutes later and asked me to get into the passenger seat. He turned the knob and nothing happened. He pulled the knob off, and showed me it was broken in the back. he took a pair of plyers and turned the stud where the knob connected and cool air streamed through. He told me to go and order a $10 part from the dealership and that'd fix me up. He didn't charge me a cent for his time. He could have made a bunch of stuff up, charged me $1500 and I wouldn't have been the wiser. Been taking things into his shop ever since and directing people to him as well. It's hard to find shops like that, but once you do it's a thing of beauty.
