JoeT4R’s 2001 SR5 Build & Maintenance Thread

I've built mine the way I think Toyota "might" have done it if they had the gonads to build a sport model that was hopped up. Toyota is too conservative IMO. Imagine if they dropped the 5.7 V8 or TT V6 in the 4Runner and Tacoma as a sport edition, mild lift, larger tires, proper gearing, etc.

She sent me a photo of the truck when it was bone stock. Pretty wild to see it like this. I somewhat miss the simplicity of it being stock and everything.

That cool she had old photo and sent it gotta have B4 shot.

I get the simplicity sentiment, can't say I miss any of "stock and everything".

And your build is awesome, so I can't disagree with you there. Toyota is definitely conservative even in their current lineup, especially compared to many other makes and models. That would be amazing, especially with larger tires & better gearing.

A V8 in a 3rd gen though? Gonna make that thing take off like an airplane, lol! I will say I love my 5VZ and the reliability of it. 325K and counting as of right now.

For sure! It's pretty cool to be able to see photos of it before my ownership. I like the simplicity of stock because I... don't really know to be honest, lol. But I miss it some. I'd love to have a second 3rd gen, completely stock and just restore the thing with all new OEM parts. Just to get that feeling of what it would have been like to drive it off the lot from day one.

VVTI was a major jump. Toyota built things for dependability. Hence why they are so conservative.

You think the 3ed gen are slow. Should have ran around in a 1983 4x4 sporting a 22re carb .... weighted as much or more than the 3rd grn and was really underpowered. ....

Big photo dump from adventure time with my littles. Took a trip out to Skyline Drive. It's insane how I've never been and no better way to spend it than with my kids. An awesome time was had. Virginia truly is so incredibly beautiful and I feel so blessed to call it home.

A side note, the steep inclines/grades really put the works on the 4Runner. Highest transmission temps I observed were up to 212⁰ but cooled down when stopping at the overlooks. No issues to report though.

Fram....eww. Had one fail on me, seriously. Luckily didn't take out the motor.
I seen 3 fram filers fail in my buddy's garage. Starving the engine for oil. In various engine type. That's one oil filter I never use again.

Going to take a sample at my next oil change and send it off for analysis. This past run I used the same filter and had no issues so I decided to run it again to see if it'll yield the same results each time.

They literally collapse and choke off oil flow. No analysis is going to fix this. If you're ok with the risk of your oil filter destroying your engine, then keep using fram. They have major mfg issues. Check on the internet and see what we are referring to. :)

[ I used to use Fram for years. Now I will not touch an oil filter for any vehicle because of this issue]

Now I be silent about this as always it's your rig..:)

I wanted to personally try them since I've heard only negative things. My Dad runs them exclusively on his Tacoma and has for the past 20 years. No issues to report with them. I haven't had a bad experience yet, either. I'm going to run it again for this oil change and see how it does. I'll probably switch to something else at my next change, whichever flavor I'm feeling at the time.

The Fram Ultra filters are good filters. Haven't heard of anyone having issues with those. I run them on all my cars with no issues.

To each their own, but when a good quality filter like Mobil 1, Purolator, or Wix are less than $10-$12 seems like a no brainer.

The Fram that failed on my 1991 Toyota blew the seal out. Leaked oil all over in the driveway and luckily didn't happen on the hwy.

That's the beauty of site, freedom to run whatever you want. Not saying, hey, that's the wrong filter to run. If it works for you then...great. :)

Like Brillo and Speedy used to do, I too ran regular Fram oil filters back in the day with no issues for 10+ years. I never blew out a filter or lost a motor to one. This included a stroked street/strip chevy 383 in the high 12s.

Until one day I cut a used one open just to see for myself.
Ok filter media, cardboard upper and lower pleat separator plates, stamp steel bypass spring, thin sealing gasket and mines didn't have a drain back valve.

That was enough to sway me to run nothing but Toyota, Wix and Napa Gold from then on.

KN's and the like a way overkill for out 183hp motors.

Just curious, if you cut apart the Fram ultra?

I didn't cut open an Ultra oil filter back in the day, parts were hard to get where I was. And probally wasn't available back then.

But today there is so much info out there than back in the 70s 80s.

I saw a cut apart ultra pic. Still has that stamp steep bypass spring.
Well, why re engineer a part if it still working good. The rest of the parts looks decent.

Im still a Toyota, wix and Napa gold user.
