John's Turbo v6 Build

As some of you know I already have a "build" thread but to me I mostly did cosmetic things as apposed to an actual build. That is why I am starting this thread as I want to document and explain the entire process of me Turbo Charging my 4.0 4Runner. To my knowledge this will be the first one in existence and I intend to show you all how I'm going about this. Through my extensive research and gaining helpful knowledge from multiple people I have a general list of everything I am going to need. The plan is to utilize a t3/t4 turbo with a .63 A/R. On top of this to start I will be running no more than 5 PSI of boost to slowly see how the engine is going to handle this along with making sure the wideband readings are within a tolerable range. All of which will be in a rear mount setup. I will be running AN 4 braided line from the oil filter housing to the turbo feed with bolt on hose connections and AN 6 line from the turbo drain to a scavenge pump then back to the oil fill neck with multiple one way check valves in line. There are many other parts that are going into this but heres what I have done so far today.

Now to begin:

I today started with 2 components that in my mind are extremely important. Those components being a boost gauge and a wideband gauge. I did not want to cheap out of either of these so I went with AEM ones.


I started with finding a viable port after the throttle body to gain an accurate boost reading (for now only vacuum) I settled on a blocked off port and drilled the center out to be able to feed the line through. I then routed it down following factory vacuum lines and then terminating at the amp fuse holder I built.

Here I drilled and bolted in place the electronic boost sensor and put on the vacuum line. Once I found this was secure I moved onto the next step of routing wires. For ease of access I decided to run the boost gauge wires and wideband wires at the same time.

To do this I cut a hole just big enough in the factory grommet and fed both sets of wires through. I left enough slack inside the vehicle and then zip tied the engine bay lines in place. I put the wideband wire to the side for now.

Next I went inside the vehicle and used an add a circuit to run these gauges when the vehicle is turned on. The positive wires were soldered and shrink wrapped and the negative was terminated on a body bolt.

I next routed these cables up behind the center console trim for placement.

Lucky for me I found that the 4wd switch is the exact same size as the gauges so once these are finally installed, the boost gauge will be placed in that location, a second hole will be drilled on the other side for the wideband gauge and for now the plan is to mount the 4wd switch in the overhead console.

once this was tested I moved onto routing the wideband wires. For obvious reasons the cable is not long enough so I ended up extending it 6 feet. Is this overkill? Yes, but I wanted to have extra room incase I needed it. This was then routed around the frame and zip tied on place next to my muffler (future turbo location with wideband being placed after)

This is everything I was able to get done today. The rest of the parts need to be ordered but hope to do that within a few weeks.

Can't wait to see the progress on this thread. Forced induction is just so addictive, and I miss it dearly. I had some good times in my old Talon TSI.

PS on the side note am I tripping or is your ac display has inverted colors? It looks so much better!
 
Since you'll be running a rear mounted turbo, have you possibly thought about an oil-less turbo? Granted, it does have to be water cooled, but that may be an easier option for you as you wouldn't have to tap into the oil pan, just some food for thought! If you're interested, Comp Turbo makes them.

Also, what do you plan to use for tuning?

Thanks! and yeah I looked into those. since this is really a starter system to learn on I decided to go the oiled route for budget sake. As far as feeding the oil back to the engine my idea was to actually tap into the oil fill. clownmeat in the third gen section did this and it seemed to work great for his turbo settup from what he told me. That may change though haha
 
Quite the start to the worlds first turbo build with a couple gauges

You have to start somewhere lol. These gauges alone were 350 because I want to do this properly. Given that I’m a college student working a regular job I have had to save up for this for a while now after paying for bills and school. Planning to get the rest of the parts in the next couple weeks. In other words Rome wasn’t built in a day and this is no exception lol

Work continues

Today I did more work prepping for this project. For one my radiator had a few leaks and the hoses were getting pretty soft. Along with this my transmission had been having some issues for a while now. Rewind to last year I had the filter changed for it but unknown to me the rest of the fluid was not removed leaving roughly 10 quarts of dirty transmission fluid still in there. I was experiencing rough shifts, a shudder, and most annoyingly when I would slow down and then press the gas it would rev and then slam into gear. All of which I initially thought were signs of a failing trans. Luckily this was not the case. For one I found that it was low on fluid explaining most of these issues but the fluid was still dirty so I in total changed 14 quarts for good measure and checked the overflow at the end. Now my whole cooling system including thermostat, serpentine belt, and transmission are perfect. I wanted all of these things sorted before I moved onto the next steps in the project.

Side note: I also purchased most of the fittings I need for this project today. Now the only thing I need are the pressure fittings, scavenge pump and braided line to plumb the system ahead of time.

What are your plans for the fuel and ignition management?

Given how low of boost I plan to run in conjunction with the smaller turbo size I'm not anticipating this to be an issue. If I notice based on readings that the system is running hot due to no intercooler or lean I can easily disconnect things until I add larger injectors/fuel pump/engine management. Since theres no info on turbo 4th gen v6 4runners I'm basically in the dark other than a buddy of mine and some of the boosted third gen guys lmao.

My brother says there are a few Tacoma guys running turbos, same motor as ours. Might be worth a peek to Tacomaworld for some hints. Sorry no links.

Thanks man! I'll do some digging on that and see what I can find. If there is info out there it will be extremely helpful.

Im a big fan of water-methanol injection for intercooling. Truly amazing stuff can be done with it. I used it on my turbo Eclipse 22psi on a larger turbo with pump gas. Works great :)

If/when you get to needing larger injectors, see if the Apexi SAFC or Neo is compatible with 4Runner... or other compatible piggyback fuel controllers to dial in the fuel curves. Combine that with your wideband and you can get pretty far with it
 
That’s kind of an asshat remark. Guess maybe jealousy got the best of you...

Yeah not sure what to say about that other than you can never please everyone lmao. Oh well haha. Would rather do this properly the first time than just slap together something and hope it works if you know what I mean. this coming week I plan to order more parts once I finish up my schematic of everything.
