John's Turbo v6 Build

It's a remote-mount turbo setup, not located in the engine bay where gravity drains the oil.

You can't rely just on the pressure from the feed side of the turbo's oiling setup to drain the oil quickly enough when the turbo is mounted at or below the oil pan level.

Thanks for explaining that lol. I've had a few people ask.

Just installed the turbo timer today. The goal in using this was to keep the scavenge pump relay energized for a period of time after the vehicle is shut off to drain any remaining oil in the system back to the engine.

To do this you have to connect in my case the red to constant power and black and grey to ground. Then connect green to the relay trigger. This way when the ignition is on the trigger wire already there will turn on the timer and when the vehicle shuts off and power is cut then the countdown will begin. The only thing I overlooked was that now this will power the trigger wire circuit for 30 seconds so I’ll be installing a in line diode to prevent voltage from going back down the line.

I fixed the last electrical issue I was having. The turbo timer was having an issue where it was sending power back up the trigger wire into the vehicle. Needless to say this was annoying when you shut the vehicle off and all the interior functions are on lol. I fixed it by installing a 5 amp diode in line so it can feed the trigger signal but voltage can’t go back up that wire.

Big news!

I have an appointment on Tuesday to get all the exhaust work done to make this work. I was going to use a buddy’s welder but with how little experience I have I just decided to get someone else to do that part. Given his work pictured below I’m excited to see how it all turns out lol. Also below it is another picture which shows the general layout of the parts

Wow, this build looks really good. Very clean and professional looking. Love that overhead console........ looks stock.

Now, if I can only find the time to just detail my runner, I'd be happy, LOL.

Good luck man!

Wouldn't having a 90 degree elbow from the exhaust pipe to the turbo mounting flange, or just have the exhaust pipe merge directly to the mounting flange, direct the exhaust flow better to the turbo for quicker spool than having the flange perpendicular to the exhaust pipe? I tried example pics to Imgur but it's broken at the moment :(

I'm sure your welder friend will have some suggestions though :)

Thanks! Once I get the turbo mounted it will be on to charge pipes which won’t be very hard. The only semi difficult part is that I’ll be building a carbon fiber intake to adapt from the charge pipe to the stock intake

Originally that was my plan but just due to space restrictions I wasn’t going to be able to fit it like that without it sticking down below the frame. I’m not too concerned about this design as it seems like the third gen turbo guys were running it without issues. It’s not ideal but without another option it will have to do haha. Once I get this mounted I’ll be able to move onto charge pipes and building a carbon fiber intake

Here's the 90-degree setup on Clownmeant's 3rd-gen https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/99742-clownmeats-build-thread-2.html?highlight=turbo

Oooh carbon fiber intake

Just dropped off the 4runner today for all the exhaust work! The guy does really good work from what I’ve seen and he’s going to do it in stainless steel as well. He also said he would make the turbo section removable for ease of access which I’m happy about. Hoping to hear back from him tonight on the measurements of everything.

looks like another sts turbo install if i remember seeing the turbo by the muffler

It is similar to that design. I originally planned to not have a 90 but he said things would flow more efficiently this way. And yeah I am keeping my flowmaster on it. I didnt want it to be too obnoxiously loud haha

If I'm looking at this correctly (bear with me,I haven't slept yet becausenightshift), the turbo is post-muffler? The exhaust is going to be even quieter than it was naturally aspirated, even when the WG dumps open. I'm not saying it's bad thing, it'll be quite a sleeper...or should I say a quiet sleeper LOL

Yes, it sure looks that way to me as well. John, is it mounted by the rear axle? If so, I’ve never seen a setup like that before. If it is how it t appears, what is the advantage/reason behind not doing the typical engine bay mounting? Forgive my density if this is a dumb question, as I’m not experienced at all in turbo systems. Every one that ve ever seen has been literally attached to the exhaust manifold, or very close to that point.

It is post muffler haha but because its a flowmaster I think it should still have some noise to it but I definitely wanted it sleeperish. I'm suppose to pick it up this evening :eyebrows::eyebrows:

The main reasoning behind this setup was that this is where is seemed that most third gen guys mounted theirs as well as one 4th gen v8 guy that I talked to. The other reasoning was down time and budget. Since this is my daily driver with doing this setup I've been able to add almost everything with nearly zero down time other than for this exhaust work. On top of this I wanted to if I needed be able to return things to stock relatively easily

Makes perfect sense, just never seen it mounted like that before. As I said though, I’m not super knowledgeable with turbo systems. My only forced induction experience is with my twin screw supercharged ‘03 Terminator (also my screen name). I’m definitely interested in seeing how this works out because I’d love to eventually add some type of forced induction to my v8 runner. Only problem with the style you are running is that it would mess up my brand new TRD duals.

sound clips anyone lol?

Yeah its currently an axle dump until my welder and I figure out routing. Any idea how to post a video on here because I have a few sound clips lol

promised sound clips!

as the title suggests here are the sound clips! no charge piping yet but wow is all I have to say lol. This is how to make a v6 4runner sound good lmao:clap2::biggrin2::eyebrows:
