Day 8:
Starting point: Waterton Lakes AB
End point: Waterton Lakes AB
Distance driven: 61 km
Distance hiked: 12.9 km
We spent the whole day again exploring Waterton Lakes National Park. the main activity was the long hike to Bertha Lake located high between mountains. When we left, it was sunny but this quickly disappeared to give way to light showers. The trail climbs along the mountainsides and offers a superb view of Upper Waterton Lake.
After a little over 3 kilometers with a very moderate climb, we reached Bertha Falls.
We continued further towards Bertha Lake, an ascent of an additional 325 meters, via a series of switchbacks with a steeper climb. From that moment on, the sky became clearer and clearer. We had several views towards the Waterton lakes, but also up the steep mountain sides.
After another 4 kilometers, we finally reached Bertha Lake. This is surrounded by high mountains on three sides.
The surroundings of the lakes are quite wooded and offer little space to settle down for a good rest. We had a small snack then began our long descent back.
One of the viewpoints allowed us to see Lower, Middle and Upper Waterton Lakes at the same time.
While it is sad that a wildfire burned most of the park's forests, this provides an opportunity for new flora to thrive. In addition, the view is much less obstructed this way.
After completing this superb 12+ kilometer hike, our first long hike and considering the altitude, we needed to rest our knees and feet. So we decided to go and drive the Bison Enclosure Loop.
Next, we drove the Red Rock Canyon Parkway. We had already traveled this route during our first lightning visit on August 12, 2009, in the rain.
Back on the road towards Waterton Lakes, the views of the lakes and mountains were superb.
Tomorrow morning we will return to Red Rock Canyon to hike two short trails. Then, we will say goodbye to Waterton Lakes and hit the road for a short stay in British Columbia.
