Just bought a 2004 Sport V8!! Couple of Q's...

Hey all -

I'm pretty new to this board as I just got a 2004 Sport V8!! 46k on the clock, X-REAS, JBL Synthesis, yada yada.

I had a few questions, so please bear with me if they are noobie q's.

1. Think I got a good deal? Paid 26.5 out the door including bumper to bumper warranty to 100k.
2. Speaking of the warranty, u think its worth it? $1360 for the full coverage. The vehicle is certified, so I already have the powertrain warranty. The sales manager convinced me that the extra warranty is for "all the electronics". I sort of think thats BS, but what do you think? Is there any reason I should keep this extended warranty other than peace of mind? I would expect that the T4R would have minimal (if any) problems?
3. The vehicle was a lease return. Any thoughts on what I should look out for?

If it's still in warranty, talk to Shaun McKinsey about the Platinum extended warranty. He's a member here and has the lowest price we have found. Search for his name and you'll find his phone number.

According to consumer reports any type of extended warranty is not worth of your money. I'd suggest to save cash and get navigation system or supercharger.

While I would normally agree with that statement, my truck has a sunroof which has proven to be problematic on the 4th gen models. A single repair on the sunroof will more than pay for the extended warranty.

While I myself am weary of extended warranties, I have to admit I'd rather have a little peace of mind. With all the new advanced electronic systems on the 4runner, such is the price of newer technology - more parts can potentially break. Like jharris mentioned, an extended warranty can easily pay for itself with a repair of a problematic issue down the road.

It's not BS, the 4Runner's got a ton of electronics: ABS, VSC, DAC, climate control system, etc. There's a member here who's had his ECU replaced before, IIRC I think he resides in Arizona, so heat may have been an issue.

Extended warranty is like insurance, it's good to have, but hope that you'll never need it.

I have the Platinum warranty on mine, I figure with the extra 4WD components and all the electronic do-dahs, better safe than sorry. It's a small up front investment and if needed, it's got a huge ROI, especially if you opted for the $0 deductible plan.

Unfortunately, my sun roof is "aftermarket". The dealer told me they'd cover the motor, but if it leaks, i'm SOL.

And I have a $100 deductible. I'm going to call Shaun to see what it would take to getting a warranty from him.

Have you guys seen many electrical issues with the 4th gen 4runners?

My only suggestion with it being a lease return is if you don't have records of service assume it was not done and do it yourself. That is going to be the best thing you can do to prevent future problems.

And 1300 for the warranty is steep...you should be able to get it for around $800 with some negotiating.

I agree that you paid too much, but maybe in your area the going price is high. I was out the door with a warranty for less than 25k (up to 100k, no deductible) for an '05 SR5 v6 with 29k miles, which obviously has way less features than yours. But up here its the going rate due to normally harsh and snowy winters. 4wd vehicles up here are expensive, but 2wd trucks/suv's are dirt cheap.
I don't know you or your buying habits, but if you researched and negotiated at the dealer for the best price, be confident that you got a good deal.

Yea, in hindsight, I probably could have negotiated a much better price.

Out here, 4wd's go for a premium due to the winters. It looks like I paid blue book value (Suggested Retail) after all, which isn't great. Well, hopefully the 4runner will retain a lot of that....

DirtFinder - I assume your's is 4wd? Did you put any money down, or have a trade to get you to $18k?

Boulder4Runner....nice taste! I bought the extended warranty when I bought it new back in 04. It was an extra $1500 but I got them to extend it to 7 years or 100,000 miles. I like the extra piece of mind but you need to make sure you read everything and know exactly what is covered and what's not covered.

Fyi....I haven't had to use the warranty once. I also have the factory sun-roof and have never had a problem with it.

You get a chance to test it up at altitude yet? If not, you're gonna be happy

If you paid the Shaun McKinsey price for a warranty I'd say it's worth it... $1400 is probably not worth it, however. I paid about half that and figure it's another $100 a year insurance against some potentially expensive problems with the electronics or sunroof. My sunroof has already started making some odd noises and there are more than 20 ECUs in the 4runner now, any one of which probably costs $400 or more to replace.

I'm not expecting anything to go wrong mechanically, but cars these days are so much more than basic mechanics.

FWIW I just bought an 06' SR5 4X4 White with 24K miles on it for $23,995.00

Based on all of the studying I did in the Western NY market, it was an awesome deal. I actually bought it in PA. (I wanted a Sport, but oh well!)

I'm still thinking about the extended warranty with all the miles I stack up....

Great deal man! Well, I guess I paid too much. Based on what I found in the Colorado market, it was about market price however.

Lesson learned!
