Enjoy the highest clearance of your non-KDSS and the ease and lower cost of mod parts.

The difference is armor, front skid and sliders. Nothing else requires modification, most (almost all) shops don't charge extra for KDSS.

No. It's fine though. I'm gonna keep it stock for 2 years and then see if I want a new TP or TRD Pro. A TP with KDSS and the TRD bilstein package sounds pretty nice. Plus I love that new concrete color. I should have the current 4R paid off by then anyway

FYI, KDSS is something that lights up on the dash when you start the vehicle. You don't need to look under the 4Runner to find out if you have it or not.

If you didn't notice the KDSS being gone, I wouldn't worry about trying to replicate it. I'd be a bit cross about having paid a price for it used thinking it included KDSS, but that is one of the risks buying a used car. The salesman will tell you whatever you want to hear to get you in that car.

I'll counter that I got mine WITH KDSS, and now regret it. It rides better, yes, but I'm hesitant now on adding suspension upgrades etc for a couple reasons.

1. Most shops wouldn't touch it, know what it is, or just break it attempting to do anything (including the Toyota dealership I bought it from that had no idea what it is)

2. Expensive maintenance IF I add aftermarket suspension and something breaks - and the warranty is voided.

No. I knew what I needed to but clearly didn't know everything. I bought it used so there was no sticker. I also didn't come to this forum until after the purchase. Not sure why, made a mistake there.

OK, I can clearly understand why you made this mistake -if you want to call it that- then.

It's not obvious that KDSS is even an option, heck, most people working at the dealerships by me looked slightly confused when I mention KDSS.

I personally did not know about KDSS -or if I even wanted it- until I joined up here.

But then again I do my fair share of research before shelling out new car coin.

I love the KDSS ride on my 4Runner, but when I bought my new 4Runner in January of 2015 it was a $1750 option (though I would love it even more if it was only $1000).

If you want to modify the car, you should stay away from KDSS. All it does is provide headaches, limit your options, or require its own eventual removal.

If you want to keep the car stock, KDSS is pretty sweet.

Personally, I'd be happy you got a trail without KDSS and spend some money on suspension if you really want to.

If you thought you might want the Cement Pro why didn't you just order it now and save all the hassle of making payments on something your going to sale.

If you just want the Pro package it's easy to add to your truck you have.

No big deal. I think if you would have needed it you would have known before you bought the 4Runner. KDSS may hold its value with some folks. I would pass on buying a used 4Runner with KDSS.

A quick peak is literally that much easier and faster.

If you can touch your toes, you can see what you need to see. Heck, you dont even need to be able touch your toes.

Your option requires me engaging with some sales guy, then making some small talk, then wait for them to go get the keys, then sitting in it and and turning it on only to find out its a non KDSS model, then having to continue talking to some dude that's going to ask me... "what can do we do get you into this SUV today"... all while trying to move to the next 4Runner on the lot or onto the next dealership...

Or, you can just take a knee and answer the question yourself without any unnecessary human interaction.

I'm sorry, but this is complete BS. Lots of members on here (me included) have lifted KDSS vehicles and used them heavily off road without problems. If you're going full LT or some other wild suspension, it may not make sense, but for most people it's just fine even if you modify.

Like most things in life KDSS comes with many Pros and Cons.

The general attitude here is you can't live without it.. that is obviously BS. The OP test drove the truck right. I'm sure he thought it was fine. And it is just fine... But then he probably came here and heard all the talk and thought he missed out on the best thing since sliced bread.... He probably does no even realize the TRD Pro cannot be had with KDSS, and we all know it is best things since sliced bread LOL

So just to clarify one more time...

Pros of KDSS.
1- Truck will handle corners and drive a lot flatter in curves. The swaybars are huge... It provides more of a sports car feel. This also helps when you carry a lot of weight on overland trips... Not everyone likes to drive a big BOF SUV like a sports car, but it does inspire more confidence on the road.
2- Truck will crawl at slow speed nicely offroad. This is because the swaybar more or less disconnects from the frame at very low speed allowing for an improved amount of wheel articulation.

Cons of KDSS
1- Toyota Dealers and many others shops will not support a lift on KDSS. This does not mean it cannot be done...it just means way more potential for hassle. You may experience the KDSS lean... all have workarounds but can be a slight hassle.
2- KDSS makes the ride a bit more harsh in a straight line both on and offroad. Just like if you run big swaybars on any vehicle... the wheels on the same axle are more tied together. If you do high speed offroad... this can be very irritating.
3- KDSS is very expensive and difficult to get serviced. Most Toyota dealers will not service it. If something goes wrong you are mostly out of luck. However, it rarely has problems. But after 150+K... things are going to go belly up and it is such a unicorn that nobody knows what to do with it... There have been countless threads here with people in search of service for their KDSS. They eventually find someone.. but it is a real problem, not just myth as many will try to convince you...
4- KDSS limits what you can do with the suspension. Long travel is completely out of the question on both front and rear with KDSS. So if extreme offroad capability is in your plans (5th gen not really a great extreme offroad vehicle to start with).... KDSS is not what you want. Now you can still make a KDSS truck do extreme... Just will have to do it with limited travel unless you strip the system off.


With all that said... I think it is a great option for many people. It is really an individual choice based on your use case. Personally, I would never buy a high mileage truck with it, but something under 100k and I would have to think hard depending on my intended use.

I didn't think I'd want it. I had no idea how much id love the car, not to mention I didn't know about kdss at the time. But that's not really the deciding factor. How much I love it and kind of want a brand new one now is.
