Just joined the "Head Gasket Club"

It gave out today with an external leak. Noticed a puddle after I parked, and got under the truck with my flashlight to see some gurgling between the block and head.

I took it to the dealership, and they are going to fix it up for $1,800ish.
Head gaskets
Valve grind
Timing belt
Water pump.

I should be good to go for another 100,000 miles. It has exactly 200,000 on the clock now.

I feel your pain!

How are the other belts? Might have them replace all the belts while they have it torn apart.

I would not pay that much, you could get new head with new cam for $500 or so then pay someone $500 tops to put it on. That is for the 22RE not sure which motor you have.

I have the 3.0.
For some repairs I order to use Toyota techs and Toyota parts. In the long run it's only a little more expensive.
 
If the head gasket has not been replaced before wonder if it would still be covered under the Toyota's 'head gasket recall'. It has been many years ago when my 90 T4R headgasket had to be replaced, to my surprise, at no cost to me. Probly a long shot for $1800 would not hurt to ask?

I had them run the VIN at the dealership before I bought it.

No open recalls.
 
Yesterday I looked closely at my oil leaks. I hope I will be able to degrease everything and then pinpoint them. What looks like a bad rear main seal leak may be a bad head gasket leak. Now to set the record straight, there are two head gaskets, right and left on the V-6, aren't there? I see a leak from the front end of the right gasket and suspect a rear leak from the same one if that is true.
 
Talk to your local parts stores and see if they can recommend a good local mechanic. You'll pay less, and hopefully there is someone very qualified for your situation. For example, in Madison I could recommend an ASE certified mechanic that used to work at a Toyota dealership. You'd pay half the price, and get the same quality.
 
Don't do it!!!! 1800 is a RIP OFF. The water pump is 100, timing belt is 20ish, head gaskets aren't that expensive either. its only a couple hour job as far as labor.
 
Well, Im sure its under the knife already.

I know the parts are cheap. The labor is the expensive part.

I might have saved $400ish by using "Joe's Garage"............Meh..........i dont have the luxury of time to shop around for several days.
 
dude look around. labor MAX is 400-500. parts max is 250 or so. i drive a 3.0, ive worked on it.. you can do the belt & pump yourself, just unbolt & take off the fan, radiator hose, pulleys, & cover... you can do both of them in less than an.hour, all you need to do is mark your timing belt & the engine, so you can put it back on right & get the tension out of it...

I wish I had time to do it myself.

Being self-employed kinda sucks since I work 7 days a week, from when I get up in the morning, till I go to bed at night.

I ain't a-*****'n though. :gun6:

ETA: I would probably have more time in my day if I stopped logging in here and drooling on all the T4Rs.:girl:

I know you said you checked but I thought that recall had no expiration? I took mine in and only reason they didn't honor it was because they had already replaced it in 08. Call Toyota themselves or check another dealer

Not sure if Toyota actually classified it as a recall, that would have cost them; rather, it may have been covered under a manufacturers service repair, or something of that nature, dealership did not have a problem with it since Toyota reembursed for the cost. Anyhow, food for thought!!

I believe they closed it just recently. Don't quote me, but when I had my 2nd gen v6 the dealer told me that Toyota was starting to close the recall.

There were overly generous, but after 15 years after the last year; they are calling done.

Yes it would not hurt to ask. I went in and asked for Open Recalls. The gal gave me a computer print out which stated that the head gasket recall was completed in '97. That was a long time ago. So far no one has answered my inquiries in my first post, either. You quibble about the price when you should know there all sorts of variations in price due to geographic area changes, particularities of shops, etc. Do you want to have to have a repair done right away or are you willing to shop around?
