Just picked up my 2012 Trail Edition ... and started modding

That's a horrible idea. Tell your friends to get longer legs.

Or to buy the steps. Or to get a ride from someone else! :flamethrwoer2:

FWIW, I have the stock TE side steps and step over them every time I get in/out. But I am coming from an 06 Taco that had sliders...so I am used to it.

Oh. Have I got a surprise for you then :driving:

I'll PM you my info later.

Oh please do share!! While I do know of an area in southern NH it would be nice to try another. And I guess thats a no on the hood swap eh? :moping: Was worth a try. ;):

Haha yes, I think I'm going to have to pass on the hood offer.

Wow so many NE 4Runners - good to see. Well, the area is known as "pipeline" and it's technically operated by the Mass Mudders - though this is no mud bog. It's maybe 2 miles of woods, some water crossing, and a fair amount of mild rock crawling. Most of the water crossing is rock bottom so there is little fear of getting stuck (we've never managed to get a single truck stuck... Well... We haven't taken my TE clad in factory rubber out there yet) with exception of one or two spots.

As for ground clearance and break over/departure angles my old Cherokee on 3" of lift and 30" tires had some room to spare if you drive it right (of course I HAVE seen my friend with his Rubicon bash his t-case skid really well because he's an idiot). Anyway, the trail is really wide save one small part or two but I anticipate taking some clippers with me next time I go and trimming those back a little - I'd hate to see a magnetic scratch so soon.

Anyway, it's just a cool area - last time we were out some of the water had frozen over on the surface - so you'd make it about 2 feet out on the ice and then SPLASH down into about 2 feet. That was kind of nerve racking - but still fun and the place is really never ending fun in the summer. I could take my Jeep from beginning to end and never put a single scratch on it anywhere - and that's not a brag on my personal prowess or my Jeep's - it's just a really great trail that when driven well offers some of the best offroading in NE, in my opinion - really beautiful. And of course, as always, TreadLightly.

Oh, that reminds me. We should also get together a group this summer and go do the ORV in Cape Cod. If you have not done it, you are seriously missing the most beautiful / scenic beach and drive in all of Massachusetts.

I don't know if it's because people clean up after themselves better because their car is right beside them on the beach, or if it's because it's only reachable by the truly dedicated and therefore people appreciate it more or what. But it is easily the best beach I've been to in NE - that's including Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard (now, I'm not claiming to have been to them all - but driving through the dunes and seeing nothing but sand and sea grass all around you and then suddenly coming out on this unbelievable and relatively deserted beach and being able to drive up and down it - legally - it's just awesome).

If anyone's interested, I can rustle of some pictures of both it and pipeline. I think I've even got a short video of the Rubicon and a Cherokee on 31's going through there.

Anyway if you guys need / want any help wrenching - or if you ride motorcycles (I have a cafe and cruiser Triumph - but we're a pretty diverse group ranging from Ducati 1098S all the way to a really sick custom Harley Cross Bones) and get down / up this way let me know - my friends and I are always willing to help and always looking for people to ride with. I have a pretty good space for wrenching and a ton of tools so just let me know when you want to tear into a perfectly good truck and I'd love to, at the very least I'll sip on a beer and give you my "creative criticism".

Cheers

You can still use the same spare. Tire problems are rare and a slightly different size is not going to do anything as I imagine you would not be running on it for a long time, and not engaging the locker either driving around on the pavement.

I think my bigger concern is popping a tire offroad (this happens more than you'd think - I've had to put more than one tire back on the rim using the lighter fluid trick) and then needing 4wd to get out of there. I'm pretty sure with a locked center diff (never mind the rear locker) in 4wd running different tire sizes = bad idea.

Don't get me wrong - I'd absolutely love to fit some bigger meat under there without lifting it and I'm really hesitant to lift. I'm not sure how affected T4Rs are by it - but I ran into way too many problems with lifted Jeeps before and incorrect driveline / steering angles making them ride/drive sub-par without a significant amount of work. For my needs, the stock height of the TE is more than adequate (with the addition of some rock sliders for some rocker protection of course ) - but more meat is always better. I just really want to preserve the stock ride/drive as 80% of my time with this truck is spent on-road.

So ... that all said ... has anyone tried the larger tire in the factory spare's spot?

You "might" find a dedicated thread(s) on this subject with a search, but I do remember various orphan posts which indicated that at least a 285/70/17 will fit. I kept that in mind since I run those size tires but have yet to buy that size spare.
Be safe.

My 275/55r20 fits in the spare carrier with some room to spare.

As Jtraskell said, I too have also heard of 285's fitting without issue.
