Just plasti-dipped and painted my wheels!

For all of you plasti-dip fans, here is my result:

I used about 6 cans of plastidip, and 2 cans of Rust-o-leum Hardened Dark Bronze paint. Both of which you can get at Home Depot.


I did this when I rotated my tires so I had my tires off the car anyways. I applied about 5 coats of plastidip to the front of each wheel, about 2 coats on the inside of each wheel, and 5 coats to each center cap.

I applied two coats of the dark bronze paint to the inside and outside of each wheel and to each center cap.

Make sure you card off the wheels with either playing cards or notecards or something thin but semi-ridgid. Allow at least 30 minutes of drying time between each coat of plastidip and paint. I used a heat gun very carefully to speed the process up a bit. Don't let either dry in the cold if you can avoid it. It takes considerably longer for each coat to dry if the temperatures are low.

Be sure to tape off the air valve before you apply any plastidip or paint. I used electrical tape and it worked flawlessly.

Do the center caps separately. Don't do the lug nuts because you'll end up ripping it off when you tighten them back on.

First coat of Plastidip:

So far they are still perfect. It's been about a month or so since I did them. No chips or premature peeling. Let me know what you think!

Sure does, it will be a lot messier with the paint flakes when you remove, but it does. I tried on my spare first..

I appreciate that @combatmedic but I kind of like the white letters showing for some reason.

@ohnoitsthecops Correct. I used the plasti-dip as a base coating so that I can remove and return to stock with no harm done. All in all I'm actually protecting my wheels.

Looks cool - I may give this a shot too... Did you remove the cards after each coat, or was there no worry that they would cause peeling after everything dried?

I had to keep taking the cards off because I only had so many. Then I started using notecards to save myself some time. I don't think it makes a difference either way. Just be careful with them when removing and let ample time between coats and you'll be good to go.

Love the way our wheels turned out. I have the same stock rims on an 07 that I just bought. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Just curious how yours have held up after a few years? And did you ever try removing the plasti-dip?

I just sold my sport wheels with dip and paint still on them. Was on for 40k, there was a slight knick or two over the couple of years, but nothing really noticeable. Once I took them off to sale I did notice some hairline cracks in the paint, but you could only see that up real close. I also did that set up a set of tires before and it did just fine for 40k as well. Removed fine with a good pressure washer.

Typically just dipped wheels you can start a peeling process and the dip comes off like a rubber latex glove, if that makes sense. Once you have dipped then painted it makes almost a MM thick candy shell type thing. After 3 years of dipped and painted wheels, the paint a dip almost become one, so it is really hard to remove like a latex glove. You will need some power, hence a "good" pressure washer, something that will slice a finger off. This power will remove the paint and dip that have been the wheel protection.

A typical $1 for 5 minute wand car wash pressure washer won't do anything to your dip/paint combo. I had done many many washes through all types of brushed/brushless/wand/paid service car washes and never had an issue

When I removed the last time I had a gas powered big washer and had to put the nozzle down on the wheel to get it to budge.

This was my first time, lasted 35kish. Removed then bought duratracs, rode stock for awhile then went bronze. Didn't like bronze, cleaned the bronze then just painted the gray over the bronze. Lasted 42k then bought SCS and sold the wheels.

Has anyone done this who also also had the problem with the rusting wheels? I'd like to try this new look but I have some pretty bad rusting and paint peeling issues.
