Just replaced steering dampener(shock)...

It is a fairly easy DIY for those out there thinking of doing this. Comments: The steering feels smoother, more refined, improved feel. I installed a KYB unit as the original was still in place after 92k miles and numerous years(since 1990). Much better, or refined response through the steering wheel, especially going over bumps.

Please explain more. I will be wanting to do something to tighten up the steering eventually, but replacing the whole steering gear box? I don't know about that $$$$ ...

Look behind your skid plate, say hello to your steering dampener. It takes more time to get the skid off than it does to replace the dampener itself . Kyb is a brand of shocks

Testing- I have a brand new OME dampener, never used, might be willing to sell it...

You might check to see if your 4runner is applicable to the steering recall. Toyota recently replaced the center link on our steering assembly for free. We have not changed the tie rod assemblies, but much of the front end has been, so it is pretty tight. I've replaced the both a frame bushings(urethane), ball joints(upper and lower), and torsion bars(sway-a-way). Any improvement now is felt quite easily.
These trucks have a fair bit of age and miles on them now, so, any improvements or parts you put into them will generally yield huge improvements or gains in performance/safety.

Somebody removed my skid plate long before I ever owned it.

I'd take the dampener if it works on my 1988 4Runner. .. how much?!

My 4Runner has only one recall, and the local Dealership is currently attempting to get out of doing it because it's a 20+ year old recall and my truck is 23 years old ... yet the recall is still valid .. HA HA!

These dampener from OME are good for 86-89 4runners. I bought it from rocky-road.com, and the only reason I didn't use is because the PO modified the mount, and I'm kinda forced to using a rancho shock, which honestly has been no prob. I bought it for $74 as you can see at their site.. make an offer bra. Its as new as an umbilical cord, lemme know brother. Ofcourse it'd be made fair.

does your steering wheel have a little play before the actual wheel turns? if so, i think on IFS gear boxes you can tighten up the play. i have some on mine as well and havent looked into yet

My stock one got replaced at 173k. That thing was toast. I also went with KYB. I've been pretty happy with it, as well as the KYB gas-a-just shocks. Combine a new steering damper with a new pitman and idler arm and I feel like I'm driving a completely different vehicle.
