KDSS and Trail/Trail Premium

Hey, lurker, new to the forum, but I can't find an answer to this question, so I hope you can help. I google searched for it, and searched the forum, to no avail.

Question:

Is KDSS still available on the NON-Premium Trail edition, or only on the Trail Premium?

Background:

I'm in the market for a 2015 4Runner Trail or Trail Premium. I've been requesting quotes from all the local dealers. 2 of them have told me that KDSS is only available on the Trail Premium. Now, the brochure, and Toyota web page still lists KDSS as an option on the Trail. The build and price function on the mobile page still allows one to spec a standard Trail with KDSS, and Truecar still allows one to get a quote with KDSS on the standard Trail. Has anyone heard this? Are they just trying to get me to bump up to the premium, or possibly because the KDSS equipped 4Runners they have on the lot are Premiums?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Toyota also has regions where some options are not available even though they are manufactured with those options. I'm in the DC area and just bought a Trail Premium with KDSS. Apparently this area does not have any Trail with KDSS so I could travel far to find one or get the Premium, which I did.
 
I just picked up a '14 Trail (non Premium) with KDSS last weekend. It was hard to find one, the dealer had to trade with another dealer over 100 miles away to get it.
 
Each sales region determines what options they are going to sell. Notice the Toy.com configurator asks for your zip code, this so you can "build" only according to what options your region decides to sell. If your region chooses not to sell KDSS, it will not show up, and the dealer will tell you anything but the fact that you can get it in another region, or that he could trade if he'd take the trouble. Few will bother, risking that you'll not go hunting.

Go out of your region if you really want something, it's done all the time.

If there is a significantly better deal available in another region, it might be worth the trouble to travel and buy there. I picked up a 2015 Trail with KDSS a week ago from Ohio. Took a week for my dealer in Indiana to track it down, but they're out there.

I had a feeling that it was related to availability, but was unaware of the different regions. Thanks for the information, guys. Much appreciated.
 
I got mine on Thursday -- a TEP. I tracked it down in the pipeline of production and then just waited a few weeks to trade in my old car. I jaw-jacked with the dealer a fair amount on this topic when I was seeking one, and the theory of lopsided allocation is true. They're out there, but you're much more likely to find one in Colorado than for instance Oklahoma. Dealers can typically swap though, so explore that option.

You can also catch production as its happening and augment what options are being installed in the truck -- before it comes to the dealer. I forget how they code them, but you essentially just catch it BEFORE it's assembled. That way you can affect the options on the line, all the way down to the color. So, if you know a trail is coming, you can make it a TEP with whatever options you want -- including KDSS -- as long as you arch it pre-assembly. The only drawback to this is the wait. It can take a while to get the truck to you -- 10ish weeks was their estimate...
 
You likely will not easily find one in our region. I know, I tried. But they will show up at dealerships in western PA, KY, OH, within about 500 miles and then saw some in SC too. Most will be out west I think. You can definitely intercept one that is being built or you can special order one if you have the time and if your dealer will do it (they will try to downplay KDSS if they can't easily get it , tell them too bad , that's what you want ). Orders will take about 2-3 months at least. Mine took 5 since I fell between model year cutoffs. I have probably one if the few KDSS TE non-premiums in my zone. Worth the wait IMO.
 
X2 on KDSS being well worth it. I've driven non-KDSS and XREAS equipped 4Runners, and you can't beat it for variable road conditions. XREAS is great, but it doesn't serve you half as well for off-road conditions. KDSS makes a substantial difference for both. Get it.

Short answer: yes you can get a KDSS equipped base trail still.
I purchased about 45 days ago a 2015 base trail edition with KDSS. But, I had to fly to Colorado to get it!
 
NJTrail is right it's almost impossible to get a kdss equipped trail in this region. I'm on Long Island and it took almost four months to get my 2014 super white TEP w/KDSS. But definitely worth the wait.
 
Any KDSS 4Runners are rare.

When I bought my 13 TE, there were in the entire southeast, and only 2 were available to trade with the dealer I visited.
 
I'm in KY and I had trouble finding any with KDSS. Of the few that I found, all were premiums. Ending up buying a premium and am happy that I did so--the Softex is what sold me. Feels so much better/more resilient than cloth.

Bought mine in DC and drove it back to KY since the price & options were best there.
