Keep TPMS or dump it if always airing down

I drive on sand weekly come the warmer months, and with my Pathfinder in which I retained the TPMS, the frequency of airing down must have confused the system and the annoying dash light ended up staying on for eternity.

I'm getting new wheels for my 13' Trail, and I think I may just omit the sensors all together. Just curious if others find the sensors robust enough to continue to work in conditions where the tires are 'below safe pressure' quite often...really wish there was a reflash for something like this. Darn gov't requirement.

Assuming the sensors are the same as in the 4th gen (a pretty safe assumption) I'd say don't worry about the airing down frequency. My tires have been aired down hundreds of times and tpms always works exactly as expected.

If you take the sensors out the light will be on all of the time. I too air down often and the light goes off after airing back up. Plus its a good reminder to do so.

You can always just do the TPMS pipe bomb (now I'm probably on some sort of watch list). Take your TPMS sensors and put them in a "pipe bomb" that you attach somewhere on the outside of your vehicle, then the light stays off even when you're aired down. I know there are instruction on how to build the pipe on Tacoma World.

I air down weekly as well and never had a problem. I wouldn't worry about it either.

I air down to 18psi 2-3 times a week (sometimes more) and have had no issue with the light turning off. Once or twice, it took up to 5 minutes after airing up for the light to turn off.

Wow, TPMS pipe trick...that is genus! I'm just being cheap and lazy really, I am ordering wheels/tires online and want them mounted and balanced...but don't feel like paying $250 for a new set of monitors.

Of course if I want to do the pipe trick I'll have to unmount the tires on the stock wheels and salvage those...so either way I am taking wheels and tires apart. Hmm.

Check eBay for TPMS sensors. The cheap ones work just fine.
