How can one erase from computer? At dealership?

At the very last step of programming:

Switch ignition ON and OFF twice to program a remote transmitter code
whilst erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote
transmitters are currently registered or five times to erase all registered codes.

Well I tried this to program an eBay key fob. I only had one oem key and fob when I bought the vehicle.

The eBay fob would not program, and I unintentionally deprogrammed my oem fob.

I went through the procedure about 10 times with the oem fob to reprogram it. I get all the way through the end, & it confirms that it’s programmed (step 9). I then open the door to end programming & then the fob does nothing...

So I can’t get the oem fob reprogrammed, and now the alarm randomly sets off...

JetBoy1975, I'm not sure how to "hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously" in step 8. Nothing seems to happen after that step and step 9. I get the confirmation "System should now lock and unlock vehicle.." after step 7, but nothing past that. Also working with new transponder key from dealership, and not a key fob remote. Thanks!

I went through hell with this also. What i found is that the timing is critical, the instructions say 1.5 sec, but i think that may be the MAX amount. When I finally got it to work I only held it for around 1 second. Each time previously I was holding it for about 2 seconds.

Ok, so... figured it out I think. My problem was trying to use key FOB remote programing with a key transponder! DoooH! :doh: I was thinking the "hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously" was referring to the 4Runner door LOCK and UNLOCK buttons, not the key FOB remote's. ...Oh well..

Found the transponder programming and it worked like a charm. Here's the thread that did it for me by digin66.

Hello all

I purchased a 2006 4Runner Ltd a few days ago from Carmax and my baby has only 1 key fob. I still have the key fob from my dearly departed 2000 4Runner (may she rest in peace).

Is it possible to re-program the key fob to work with my new 4runner?


If possible does this have to be done at a toyota dealership? I appreciate any insight that you all may provide!

BTW I am new to this forum, so forgive me if this has been posted.

DO NOT go waste a bunch of money having the dealer program it. I got a spare flip key for $15 off ebay and had a local lock shop cut it to my master key. If you search the forum you can easily find the programming procedure. It took me ten minutes to do both procedures. Total cost 17 and some change. Save your money for beer hahah this is all assuming you have the master(should be the black key with toyota logo)

I tried to program a new (used) OEM fob today using these instructions and failed time and again. Each time I get through the steps and hit LOCK to confirm programming, the car locks/unlocks twice to indicate the fob did not program correctly.

I also tried clearing all the fobs registered with the car, then programming this one first. No dice. I was able to get my original fob reprogrammed correctly, so I'm sure I'm doing the process correctly.

Of note the seller I got this from on ebay suggested I buy a fob that has the same FCC ID on the back, which I made sure to do. After my first round of failures I tried changing the battery in the fob, which had no effect.

Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?

So you may be running into an issue I see occasionally, specifically that the vehicle is already programmed for the maximum number of keys/remotes.

In those cases I will verify with the customer that they have provided ALL the keys/keyfobs they own & wish to have programmed to the vehicle. Then you'll start with the "Delete all registered fobs" step to wipe the memory and start from scratch (if you're doing keys you at least one Master key (Black Key, not a Grey Valet Key), then just follow the steps for registering new keys/fobs.

I will say though that I have had a lot of hit & miss with aftermarket keyfobs and keys, I don't know what it is... but they can be really finicky.

Also make sure all your door lock actuators function properly, if you have one or more that are intermittent then you're not going to be able to do this process. You can also probably have a locksmith do it for you on the cheap as they usually have a small scantool to use as a back-up if the "manual" method doesn't work.

i also bought some off of ebay and i can get the truck into program mode, but never saves the FOB settings, i tried to erase previous fobs and no luck as well.

I have successfully reprogrammed my remote entry fob (not the key) for my 2004 T4R OEM fobs and for a fob purchased off Amazon. It took several tries. You have to be persistent and follow the instructions exactly.

I have a link to a site for doing this. Not all model years can be done.

Using this step from the instructions for my 2004 T4R I was able to change the code and recode 2 fobs, an OEM and a new one from Amazon. It took several tries with the first two but eventually I got them both coded.

In the meantime the person who took my keys has returned them so I need to code the second OEM fob with the code from the first 2. I tried the returned fob and it didn't open the doors or lower the rear window, so I know it changed the code. Now to see if I can just add the 3rd one back to the group.

The key thing works. Was able to erase all current fobs and then I reprogrammed the two I had, however, it still doesn't want to accept one so I'll just junk it. I have a 2008.

If it's an OEM fob you might post it for sale. After market fobs aren't too expensive but OEMs are worth some money. Ask your local dealership for a price. I have to reprogram a 3rd remote fob so I'll see if my 2004 will let me do that. If not, I'll delete all of them and program the OEM fobs.

I have 4 sets of keys for a 2012 Corolla. I lost 2 original sets in the house, but had the courtesy key. I had a locksmith create a new master from the courtesy key. Then I found the lost 2 sets and he reprogrammed all of them again, but he had some kind of laptop-like device that I had to pay $25 for him to use (he said it was some kind of payment he had to make whenever he used it).

All 4 keys will start the car and open the trunk, including the courtesy key (he cut that one to do this). The 3 keys with built in remotes will all unlock the doors. Good locksmiths can do just about anything.

I got mine from USA Remote last November for $15 and like you, it took 2 tries. Then the first week of this month whoever took my keys last September (by accident?) returned them to lost and found at the gym. They had them for 8 months. I guess the weather had to get warmer so they could put on a lighter jacket and find my keys.
