Key not working for certain things

Hey guys,
I bought my 2007 sport about 6 months ago with 140k miles. I noticed though although the key I got after buying the truck was black (indicates a master key I believe) it does not turn in the keyhole to open the glove box or the tailgate. It will go into the driver door and turn to unlock the doors however.
Why is this, can it be fixed as my glovebox is now locked shut.

I believe that's what is called a "valet" key. Allows access to everything but the glove box. Idea is you can lock your diamond rings and necklace in the glove box, give your valet key to the parking lot attendant, and he can't steal your stuff. Always seemed kind of a dumb idea to me, since the glove box is about as secure as a taped-shut cardboard box.

I doubt what you have is a master key.

Probably not without help from your dealer, for two reasons:

One, the valet key is missing some mechanical features that would allow locking/unlocking the glove compartment. A locksmith could probably figure that out pretty quickly and cut a mechanical key blank that will access the glove compartment.

More importantly, when you try to program another key so that it will also start the vehicle, the system on the car will recognize that you're trying to use a valet key as a master and refuse to program the duplicate key. The dealer can get a special security code from Toyota to get you past that, but plan on spending a few hundred dollars.

You might search for "duplicate keys" on this forum and do some reading. There have been a lot of posts and a variety of ways people have dealt with this.

If you're stuck with just the Valet key, it seems like your only route to get a new key is from the dealership.

To try and cut your cost down (because if you go there and ask they'll charge you $100 for a key, $40 for the key with cutting it and $60 for the programming)
I just bought this key for my 07 last week:

The dealer charged me $10 to cut it from the VIN and then I programmed it myself from instructions on this thread:

Although I don't think you'll be able to program a new master from a valet key.

Not to hijack a thread here OP:
You mentioned that it also wasn't working for the rear window switch/lock on the hatch itself.... Mines had that same problem and my new key doesn't work on it either.

Anyone got any ideas on what else this could be?

Could be someone changed one or more of the locks. Might be the issue for the OP as well. Perhaps he really does have a master key, but possibly the PO changed the ignition switch (and the door lock to match) and left the other locks original.

If you just need a separate non-chipped key to access the rear hatch and glove box, any decent locksmith can probably fix you up with that.

Thanks for the input. My hatch is my only issue and I thought it could be that the PO replaced the hatch for some reason like you said....but there was nothing (like an accident) that would suggest that on the Carfax. My only other thought is that it is being caused by rust some how... the rig spent 160k miles in NY so its got a little rust on it.

Just trying to avoid $300+ to replace the lock itself to match my key
