I've been in the Canon camp for a long time. I might move over to Nikon, but I have a tremendous amount invested in lenses. I dunno, maybe one day. it would have to be a significant advantage over the other for me to change over, but really, there isn't one at the moment.
There are some nicer features on either platform, but it's fanboyism to claim company superiority when there are so many models to choose from. There are some VERY nice Nikon platforms out there, and there are some VERY nice Canons. In the end, glass and light are the most important things.

I started out using Nikons and got hooked. It also helps that a couple friends and family shoot Nikon as well, which helps with the lens swapping situation. I'm with Andrew on this one, the dual dials are really nice. I really like the ergonomics of the Nikon DSLRs compared to Canon.
As gamerc said there really aren't too many nikon deals. I lurk around slickdeals quite often and find that there are more deals on Canon DSLR packages or bodies comapred to Nikon.

You can always find a deal on craigslist! I see D7000'S on there all the time for about 600-800.

Just picked up a new Nikon D5100 with an 18 - 55mm and a 55 - 300mm with some extra stuff like a polarizing filter and some UV filters. I messed up as I realized I should have gotten two polarizing filters as the two lenses are different sizes. Oh well.
All my friends use Nikon, so I figured I would as well for spare batteries and lenses. I tried out the Canons and I was willing to spend more money if they won me over, but I decided to go with the Nikon. My first DSLR!

Ha.. sounds like you and I are sporting the same kit :trophy: Just need to pick up the 300 lens this Saturday.

To all of you getting new kits - definitely try to get a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 Prime Lens!

The camera will be replaced over time (my 20d should have been replaced a few years back), but good high quality glass will last. The $200 lenses will be just that... and you'll spend that a few times over the life of the lens to replace it. Cheap glass is never worth it, IMO.

I got a D7000 2 months ago to replace my D40 that I had for almost five years. The camera is outstanding, but the D5100 is very close, the meat and bones under the skin are pretty much the same. The D7k has more buttons, a different menu set, and a beefier body.
The 55-300mm I'm somewhat disappointed with. At 300mm, even with vibration reduction, I get some ghosting and softness. f11 is a good aperture for it outside. It is best at less than 150mm, which kinda defeats the purpose of the long end (on a DX digital camera I believe the 300mm is equivalent to a 450mm on film).
I don't own one yet, but an all purpose carry-around lens that I tried out and really liked is the 18-200mm f3.5/5.6. New, they are around 800, but I've seen several on craigslist for about 4-500.
The 50mm 1.8 is an amazing lens, it is especially good @ indoor photography without a flash.
Just like mods, all it takes is $$$$!!

awesome! a canon vs nikon thread! I still shoot film, for the type of work that I do it cannot be beaten. But when I don't shoot film I shoot with a canon 5d mkIII. once you go full frame, you never go back to cropped :thumb3: as far as canon vs nikon? i prefer cankon :guitar3:

Great photos. I photographed a wedding *one time* and that was enough for me. It was for a friend, and she guilted me into it. I hated every moment of it because she had a style she wanted that was contradictory to what I wanted to do, and I was so worried about screwing something up that I was shooting non-stop.
