Kraze's Mall Crawler build thread

These photos look familiar. I got some with them pushing on your roof rack keeping you off that rock as well that I didn't upload.

Haha yeah I hope you and Connor don't mind that I snagged your photos :hatsoff:

You should upload those when you get some free time though. I'm curious to see how close I was to busting out that window.

I'm going to have to charge you one rear sway bar for the use of my photos

Coming back up it was closer, but going down, that was about as close as it got. Take all the photos you want, I can email them to you too if you want, it just takes awhile.

It's just sitting, collecting dust in my side yard. Come by and get it. It will be a pay-it-forward type deal since Broker hooked up me with those links :thumb3:

And I have an extra bike shifter too, if you want to be cool like me and do a hand throttle?

Email will work if it's easier than uploading them? I always thought it was easier to just upload them, and people could save them if they wanted to. Let me know what works better for you.

I think photobucket just takes some quality out of the photos. But I'll just upload them when I get a chance.

Was just about to say that lol. But photobucket will work for these ones, no worries there.

And believe me, there was a long discussion about duals after you guys left. It moved up from something that I wanted to do sometime in the future, to something I want to do in the very near future haha. But I'm still doing a hand throttle dammit.

Skids and a rear bumper will be ordered by the end of this year. After that is the begin of the save for duals

Good call. It's definitely going to be an awesome upgrade.

I had decided that I was going to wait and try to catch a sale before I did duals, and try to get some form of front locker done before doing them. Well, I just checked the Low Range Off-Road website and they're having a 13% sale on all Trail Gear products. This dual case thing might be happening way sooner than I had planned.

J-money$$$ you want to check/correct my parts list for what I need to do duals with a 4.7 low and 23 spline?

I know I need a gear driven, top shift transfer case out of a pickup. Or I could just go with this already built with 4.7s transfer case off LROR, right?

Toyota Trail Creeper 4.7 Single Transfer Cases - Transfer Case - 1979-1995 Hilux | Pickup | 4Runner - Toyota Parts

It's only $50 more than the 4.7 gear set once you get your core back, and it comes with a one year warranty. I'd get the top shift 23 spline one.

And then I think the adapter I'll need is this one found under the Tacoma section?

Toyota Tacoma Dual Transfer Case Adapter Kit (107531-1-KIT,107530-1-KIT)

I would get the one for the 3.4 manual, obviously.

And then there's all the little stuff I would need. I'm guessing I'd need a shifter?

Transfer Case Shifter - Transfer Case - 1979-1995 Hilux | Pickup | 4Runner - Toyota Parts

Would I need a transfer case mount?

OEM Style Toyota R151A Gear Driven Transfercase Mount

Or should I go with the OEM TC mount: OEM Toyota Transfercase Mount (105003-1) - Transfer Case - 1979-1995 Hilux | Pickup | 4Runner - Toyota Parts

What else am I missing?

And I know I'd need to get my drive shafts modified, one shortened and one lengthened.

And I found the TG instructions for the install. They do look deceptively easy: http://www.trail-gear.com/pdf/107530-1-k.pdf Steps 1 and 3 are really the only ones I don't have the tools to do.

Edit: Is pinion angle a concern when shortening the rear drive shaft for the dual cases? I'm wondering if I would need to get my ass end down before doing this.

Do it! You know I'll help you with the install!
steezemcqueen can you help us with the parts list

I bought the Marlin setup so it was all assembled and ready to bolt in. Jmoney would probably have a better idea of what else is needed since he has the TG setup.

To install the cases, i got the front driveshaft lengthed 8.5 inches, rear driveshaft shortened 8.5 inches, bought the 4xInnovation t-case mount, and built another crossmember for the crawl box. TG does have a pretty slick dual case crossmember though. Or you could do a Front Range Offroad crossmember which is probably what i will do when everything gets clocked.

After i installed it i did notice some driveline vibs since the rear driveshaft is shorter. I adjusted the upper links i have to reduce the pinion angle which took care of it.

So your thinking buying a built 4.7 case instead of finding the donor and buying 4.7's? looks like they want $200 for the core. So you would still want to find one. to get $100 of the core back and a shifter. $850-200+100 is $750 so you would be in $750 for the case with a shifter and 4.7's. Not too bad and comes setup. SO that may cost a little more but its easier.

I think I would find a local case for $100 that comes with a shifter either way. Then just buy the 4.7 gears, or send it in for the core and keep the shifter. Looks like 4.7's went WAY up in price. Mine were about $450 seems to be about $600 now. 4.7 is the way to go.

You will need a mount. If you have a poly mount on the trans go that route on the crawler. if not go with the one you posted.

The adapter kit is the right one.

As dylan said there are some vibrations. My driveshaft in the back had a bad double cardan so I ditched it for a single ujoint on each side. Your double cardan is probably fine. so I have some vibes from that. The pinion angle is just fine. And the 4.7 gear sets can be noisy. Crawl boxes in general can be pretty noisy. SO expect that. Honestly you should ride in someones truck with one on the high way to see if its okay with you. I know people that say its bad. I think its fine. Some are, some are not. Its just a roll of the dice. Mine sounds kinda nasty on the freeway in neutral. I have about 5 thousand miles on it and it has never got better or worse on the noise. so its normal in my eyes.

Keep in mind this will let you avoid a re-gear. 4.10's and a crawl box with 4.7's would be fine wheeling on 40's. The street is a different story.

Hit me up if you have any questions. Ill help you out as much as I can. You can build it no problem.

Looks like I'll have about $2,500 in dual cases.

Thanks for the info! If your hub to fender is 27" with your current setup, I'm thinking I will probably need a set of adjustable UCAs to get that pinion angle back in line then. My hub to fender is right around 27" too, but I only have an inch of body lift. I must have the tallest 8 wraps on the forum or something. But since it's not my DD, I can hold off on buying the adjustable UCAs until everything is installed to see if I truly need it though.

I am thinking of buying the already set up case. I've found a top shift case with shifter, but they want $200 for it; and I know a guy that has a forward shift case that I could probably get for cheap, but it's fully disassembled and I would have to see if they would accept it as a core even though I'm ordering a top shift case. But I'm still keeping an eye out for a suitable core. If I have to, I could just buy the case with shifter for $200 and keep the shifter and send in the core, which would basically just save me from having to buy the shifter.

I'm not too concerned about the noise. Hopefully it's not too bad, but if it is, I can just throw the sub that's in my DD into the runner and then the music will overpower any sound the transfer case makes haha.

So if I get the top-shift case with the 23 spline 4.7s, the TC mount, and grab a shifter assembly off a case I use as a core (hopefully), that's all I need? Besides a crossmember of some sort and modified driveshafts?

Speaking of that, do either of you know if the TG dual case crossmember for the Tacoma will work on the 4runner? Rock Defense Tacoma Dual Transfer Case Crossmember

I might have to buy a damn welder off craigslist just to get this done.

But yeah I figure the crawl box is saving me from having to regear and saving my clutch, so it's a good investment. At least that's how I'm justifying it to myself haha.

You supply the welder I can supply the welds.
