larger wheels on trailer than truck??

Hey guys, i am building a 4'x4' offroad utility trailer. I am making it similar to the pike peaks trailer and am wondering what your thoughts are on having larger rims on the trailer. It is not my first choice but i am on a tight budget and have a set of nice 245/75/17 mud tires available for free so i was going to pair some 17" pro comp or black rock rims with them. I have the stock 16" 5 spoke 4runner rims on the truck painted black. Here is a photo of the style of trailer and the set of rims i was going to purchase. I am thinking this rim design won't look that much bigger than my 16" wheels as the design and black finish kind of hide the size of them.. thoughts?

The reason most guys look for the same size wheels/tires on the trailer (other than looks) is so you can share the spare tire (or take one off the trailer if you need 2 spares - should your luck ever be that bad!). If you have the same bolt pattern (Chevy 6-lug fits Toyota - that's the axle I bought) you can share the spare, and 16" or 17" for a spare (for a short time) probably won't make any difference (unless you have a locker on that axle).

I second this. Also, the larger wheels and heavy tires that go with that, will make your tiny trailer ride better on the hwy.

I agree! Been lookin for a trailer like that. Very nice! I'd build some sturdy fenders w/5.gal/rotopax/LP/Co2tank mounts. :thumb:

I'm working on a similar build of my own, and I was lucky enough to have an extra set of wheels from my old 2nd gen with some less than decent 31" tires on them. What are you using as suspension on this trailer?? looks interesting.

suspension wise i am sticking with the stock slipper leaf springs but might consider adding some shocks. I just had the spring seats welded in place and think i am going to order some 5x4.5 to 6x5.5 adapters. I missed a wicked deal on some old pathfinder (1994) rims with new 30" all terrains so i am back to thinking i will order the 17" steelies and see if i can fit the 245/70/17's without rubbing.
